Default Windows 7 versions,differences?

I was at Walmart the other day, noticed they had Win7 Home premium upgrade for 128.00 as well as Win7 Home premium for 138.00 (both are in green box),whats the difference between the two? Was thinking of upgrading a few of my Xp boxes.Thanks.

I'll bet if you go back and check the prices you'll find that the non-upgrade "Win 7 Home Premium" was probably priced closer to $238.

Upgrade is exactly that... it requires a previously installed authentic version of Windows for installation, while a non-upgrade version would be stand-alone. You'd be better off buying an OEM version from either an online retailer or your local mom & pop, it's not like we get a lot of direct Microsoft support for our OS anywise.

Thanks,FYI the non upgrade version was on sale,I did not make a mistake.Oh and I'm assuming no matter which version I get ,it's only good for one computer, upgrade version or not? All my pc have legit Xp installs, was hoping the upgrade version would let me install on more than one pc.

Really? If it's not just a wierd box for a different upgrade version, $140 is unheard of for a retail windows OS.

Unless times have changed, the real difference between an OEM and retail version of the OS is that a retail one isn't tied to your hardware. You're still only allowed to have it installed on one machine at a time, but you can legitimately transfer the OS onto a different machine if you so desire.

edit: BTW... win7 OEM is around $120 from etailers so (IMO) would be a much better choice than the upgrade, but if you're leaning towards the retail box it might be worth the extra $20 for a full retail version.

It's on sale at NCIX for $97.99 for the OEM version. Never pay more than $100 for it, it's always on sale somewhere and pricematch.

Damnit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was that a link from one of the sales? I wish NCIX would link their normal online catalog to their sale prices. I just went through the normal menu to come up with the price I got.

edit:

If you're considering upgrading more than two PCs, there are such things as a 3 pack of upgrades which can typically be picked up for less than $200.
