The best protection is the user at the keyboard.

Everything else is secondary to that.

A couple years ago I finally used an antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials. It's light, doesn't piss me off, and doesn't seem to negatively affect the computer in any way whatsoever.

Personally i go Kaspersky Pure 2.0 + Malwarebytes. I've never tried MSE though, i'm really happy with Kaspersky.

I have MSE on a laptop and it's actually fairly decent.

I use MSE as well. Very good free product. Not a fan of AVG

What about the Eset Nod32 anti virus or the free edition, is it good or not, I'm thinking about it.

Microsoft Security Essentials, used it since it was in Beta, never steered me wrong.

I'm suprised that some joker has not come out with AV software called "The Computer Condom!". Tag line, "only works if you use it."

I've built a few and repaired a few pc's for friends. Almost 90% of them were delivered back with MSE installed, cheap repair or re-install of windows. That said I've implicitly said I"d never trust ANYTHING thats free if you have any value for what it's guarding.
MSE will be fine for now but in a couple months all the security companies will be comming out with thier 2013 versions...you"ll see some sales soon for 3 pc"s with a 2 year lisence for $30.00 or less. Keep watching flyers from the big box stores.
