Cool!!!! I found his site years ago and printed a lot of it out. Got to go look at it now that it's back. His tips are awesome for newbies (like I used to be) who know nothing about turning off services, etc.

For the most part, I just disable the startup programs and don't worry about the services anymore. It seemed like every 3-6 months, I would go to install something and it wouldn't work properly, then I'd have to go through the list of services I disabled to see which one was preventing it from working. Just way too much hassle for so little gain.

Black Viper rocks!

I am a firm believer that "less is more" when it comes to keeping the PC stable. The less "stuff" you have as useless overhead the less you have to conflict with the programs/games/... you actually want to run.

Just a little bump in case some of our newer posters didn't see this thread.

Just went through all of my services using the black viper guide and turned off at least 10 running services.

That plus a good disk cleanup, desktop cleanup (get those icons and files off of the desktop and into a folder somewhere other than your desktop for better performance!!!! :) ), and a defrag have made a noticable difference to a 1 month old install.
