I've always had very good luck with nvidia drivers. I can't recall any stability issues and typically experience very few/minor quirks in game. Quite pleased overall with the drivers...even BETA drivers have been very good for me.

Last time I was with AMD I had issues with GPU usage getting stuck at 100% or the "sticky" mouse cursor when it was in the top-right corner of the screen. While this wasn't the case for every user (and is likely ironed out now) it was a real turn off at the time.

I have only ever used single cards (in my computer and computers I have built for friends and family) and I can say I have never had a problem with either.

Better luck with nVidia for me (although I believe most of the issues I had over the years with ATI/AMD was the Catalyst Control Center).

i've had this "display driver has stopped working...." with 3 way 260's but with the crossfired 6870's, 6970's and 7970's i own(ed) never a problem with multi display...

CCC on the otherhand won't install if your dvd writer has a bad sata cable??

so it's probably not an AMD issue.

ATI was horrible in the past. Haven't had a red card in years and years.

nVidia all the way.

See, I {love} it when people comment on ATI drivers, especially when they admit that they haven't owned a red card in 'years and years'.

I run AMD cards at home, and at work I use a Quadro card, so that would be Nvidia drivers. I haven't had major problems with either.

Honestly, drivers shouldn't be a major factor when determining what card you're going to buy.

I've sued both and there is not a lot of variance. Each have their bright spots and dark spots. I simply prefer ATI/AMD as I've had less trouble with them, and still remember some of nVidia's greyline ethics many years ago when they had more than just ATI to worry about as competitors (3dfx, 3dlabs, matrox, ...).

nVidia is also not an option on many of our work machines as they run OpenBSD and all of nVidia's features except the very basics are unavailable in an open driver, unlike ATI.

So, back to the "six of one, half-dozen of the other" situation. :)

For HTPC use, I've had really bad experiences with nvidia drivers. I went through four cards trying to find the perfect one for my HTPC (GTS 450, 550 Ti, Radeon 6670, 7750) and the nvidia cards had serious issues with smooth playback in madVR, audio sync, and 23.976Hz compatibility. The 6670 was a little too slow for hardware decode + madVR, and the 7750 has been perfect so far.

Also, with my 560 Ti I've had chronic issues with the TDR bug. Overall, my (entirely anecdotal) experience probably favours AMD drivers. I've never used Crossfore, however.

The way I see things:

single card: TIE
SLI or Xfire: NVIDIA
3D: NVIDIA by a mile
Surround or Eyefinity: NVIDIA (probably even if single cards used, not SLI or Xfire)
HTPC: AMD

At the end of the day, this is the best breakdown of how drivers are. At least in my experience.

I've promised myself to skip the 7XXX series due to my souring by the 6XXX series.
