Default Online email options other than google and hotmail?

Are there any other options out there other than gmail and hotmail when it comes to reasonably good web based email addys?

I'll wait to see how it pans out, but with the initial reports coming out WRT Google turning even further towards sharing all of our personal information ( Google data merge called privacy threat - Technology & Science - CBC News ) I'm thinking it's time to change to a new addy.

For the time being, I suspect I'm going to just start using my rogers addy, and start forwarding my gmail addy to it so that I don't lose any current contacts while I make the switch back.

I have my own domain with email forwarding so that if I change providers then I don't have to tell everyone my address changed. Not too expensive as you don't need server space or anything.

I agree with your Gmail concerns. Always expected something like this to happen at some point (hence my domain address I mentioned above) but never expected it right now I guess.

Don't know which service is as good to be honest.

You could always buy a domain for under $10, and run your own mail server. That's what i do.

I was willing to accept the targeted ads which came with using Gmail as a "fee" for a product I liked to use. On the other hand, I refused to use other services specifically because I didn't want my information shared in any way shape or form over them. If they allow me to opt out of sharing info over other services, I'll happily continue using Gmail otherwise I'm outta here.

Dammit google. >:(

I am also looking for another email provider now I guess. My inet is too shitty and on&off to host any real servers and MS just keep bogging the crap out of hotmail loading it down with shit.

you could install the plugin called selectout tracking opt-out. it does a fairly good job in opting out of things selectout | Defend Your Online Privacy

ya, putting up a linux mail server would be a great one. if you use dynamic DNS, it's free too. and if your IP changes it's back up to date within an hour.

Is the paid-for google apps privacy policy any better? I know you can disable ads... might be worth setting that up on your own domain.

I'll probably be going back to my rogers account for a while until the dust settles. My secondary rogers email is long enough that the spam bots don't get to it. Just went through google dashboard and turned everything possible off, removed all possible info, cancelled all possible accounts (including youtube), and removed every possible gadget on igoogle.

Hopefully Google with hear the anguished crys from those of us who would love to be able to continue using gmail, but don't want any of the other crap/sharing and will change their mind(s). If they don't, it's been fun, but I guess I'll have to learn to love bing..... ;(
