Default Changing Ownership of Files

Hey guys. My mom's laptop crashed and plus I'm in the process of building her a new desktop from my old parts so I decided to get some files off her HDD. However, I've run into the trouble with errors saying that I don't have rights to access the files as I'm not the owner. I tried changing ownership to me, but it still gives me that error. She had Windows XP if that matters. Can someone tell me how to change the file ownership to me so I can copy it onto my HDD, then a memory stick, then her new HDD. Thanks!
