Pick one that you like:

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

My personal favourite is Puppy, but it requires a little more work to set up than other distros. You could also change Ubuntu to Lubuntu/Xubuntu, but that might be a bit complicated if you're not experienced with Linux.

Its not "Linux" that is laggy its the X Window you are using. I suggest installing Debian and running XFCE its the most lightest Window Manager around next to something like Blackblox

Ubuntu is a POS now. Bad idea to install it on an older computer especially with all of Ubuntu's *changes*.

Just install Debian with XFCE desktop and you are set. Any issues or problems, you can google either Debian or Ubuntu 'solutions' / workarounds as there are still some similarities in usage.

ATI is supposedly catching up with drivers but it depends what you want to do with the graphics/video/card.

Alpine would have to use the ATI open source radeon driver anyway.

Actually for the very old (DX9 or lower) ATI cards, the open source "radeon" driver is pretty good for 2D acceleration. I had an ATI Radeon 200M IGP back then and it was fine for the Fedora / Ubuntu of its day.
