I'm not a copyright/EULA lawyer so I can't answer with full confidence on the legal side of things.

IIRC, the original EULA of Win7 was originally tied very strongly to the hardware, however after the backlash that ensued, MS stayed with the same EULA format they had with XP.

What does that mean??? In theory, it's still tied to the original hardware, but in practice the "record" of that hardware is only kept around for so long, and thus, after a period of time the key can be used with new hardware without having to call MS, and in most cases, a call to MS explaining that you had to replace the motherboard due to a hardware failure resulted in a fresh key.

Not quite a definitive answer, but the ins and outs of EULA has always been a bit grey. ;)

I've purchased an OEM Win7 Pro and have since used the same install for my main rig with 3 different mobos. First time I switched it re-activated fine and the 2nd time I had to call them, took 8 mins and I was good to go.
