A decent firewall router will let you control outbound connections as well. I currently have a small Netgear FVS338 that works a treat. Even my old USR 8000A let you control outbound connections.

If you have an older box sitting there doing nothing throw pfsense or linux and iptables on it but using something ebtween modem and system/network is definitely a Good Idea(tm).
Obsolescence is just a lack of imagination.
