Default NVidia offers an explanation about driver holdup

Dwight Diercks, the vice president of sofware engineering at NVidia offered up an excuse as to why their Vista drivers have been lacking in an interview with Real World Benchmarks. The gist of it is this:

-NVidia needs to write a new driver for each of DirectX 9, DirectX 9 SLI, DirectX 10, DirectX 10 SLI, OpenGL and OpenGL SLI.

-each of these drivers for Vista would contain over 20 million lines of code which is similar to all of Windows NT.

Despite this, he says that the 8800 series driver should be released by the end of the month and the SLI driver for the 7 series, in March.

How in the heck can a driver contain 20 Million lines of code? The resulting file would be in the hundreds of megabytes.

sadly, ati, who actually gets drivers out regularly, just doesn't offer competitive performance in the high end right now.

maybe, these companies should both look at where they are putting all their money. surely, there's a compromise somewhere.

Thats more than likely millions of lines of code in HEX. Therefore since in hex it can take several lines worth just to make One Word i dont doubt millions of lines of code at all personally....
