So, you spent about an hour and a half on the phone to activate an OS / software you legally bought. Good ol' Winblows!

Do not go anywhere near McAfee or Norton 360. They are the worst programs known to man. If you want something free then go with the MS security essentials, AVG Free or Avast Free. For paid ones I have used both Avast pro and Kaspersky with lots of good luck.

Who's it for? Complete noob, or fairly well versed in safe vrs unsafe practices?

Personally.... M$ Security Essentials. It's free, does pretty well everything that the paid versions do, and since M$ wrote the OS I'd think they'd do a decent job of keeping it patched up.

1.5hours? It only takes 3-4 minutes and you don't even need to talk to anyone. I barely even call it much of a hassle.

If he said he did reinstall 20x and spent 3-4 minutes per reactivation that didn't mean doing it all at the same time.

I know that!!!! Sheeesh.... but, it's still his time and it adds up. I guess if you don't care that you spent $100+ or whatever it cost for the OS and then you have to wait 5 mins each time you have to phone just because you switched hardware.... hey, it's up to you!

You do realize that even with an OEM version you only need to phone like that if you replace major hardware. Like in the OPs case he replaced the MB, CPU and ram. If you just replace a couple minor parts like video card, memory, hard drive, etc, then it will not need to be re-activated.
