Default windows 7 on 7-year old HP pentium 4

so my Aunt asked me to clean up her computer since it was going so slow (never mind the fact that it only had 512mb of ram, and a 2.6ghz hyperthreaded P4...). I looked at the computer, and besides all the porn her son downloaded and things, there were dozens of programs that had not been used since 2003.... all the bloatware that came with it was still on there, etc. so i decided to reinstall windows(just plain easier).

well she didnt have any discs, etc and I wanted to see if windows 7 would work. like I said, pentium 4, 512 mb of ram, and a geforce mx440 64MB. obviously the graphics card is not supported for windows 7, so there was no official driver for it (most likely since windows 7 requires 128MB of vram.) but the generic driver sorta worked. however, after a bit of searching... I found a longhorn beta driver for this card and had heard numerous reports that it worked, so I installed it, and viola! it works great! no aero, but whatever. flash runs fine, HD video plays good, and is 100x snappier than it was before.

I ended up installing a 1GB more ram in it, just to help a bit, so it runs even better now. installed microsoft security essentials and google chrome as well as the copy of microsoft office she has bought in 2003.... and it all works great. I'm actually typing this post on it right now. it gets a cinebench 11.5 test of about 0.4, and it does not support the opengl test.... here is a youtube video showing it off: YouTube - 7 year old Pentium 4 running windows 7

Yep, we got some P4 machines here at work that run Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 with no real issue other then seems to take forever to boot up sometimes...could be whenever im fixing them as they have issues when i get them

That would be called an "issue".

Cool, so at least we know that Windows can actually be installed on a computer. Our friends at Redmond are making progress! o_o
