After many years of absolutely hating Norton stuff (like most people) I gave their 2009 Internet Security a shot and actually found it to be light on resources, have great customizability to lean it out even more, and it was actually rated better than Eset and Kaspersky by AV Comparitives for effectiveness. The only downside is you still need to use the Norton removal tool to clean it off your system if you don't want it anymore, which is rather ridiculous but overlookable <-- (not a real word lol) for a free copy imo. If it's free give it a shot I say and see for yourself. If you are a die hard Norton hater with no recourse than don't.

I just use a hdd drive imaging software. Schedule incremental backups and if something goes wrong I just return to my last clean backup.

Paid for Norton for years then upgraded to 360. Worst piece of software I ever bought. I use freeware now.

Personally, my motto is, "since when is security free?" I use NOD32 antivirus and a hardware firewall for my setup, and that keeps hackers and viruses out, while keeping memory and CPU usage low.

I use nod32 right now which is the best of the best I've heard. Kasperski is supposedly good aswell. Anything else I'd stay far and clear from. bad experiences with Norton!

Norton/symantec makes the worst software in the history of computing. Period. Bloated buggy crap. HP is second.

Antivirus and alike are just useless bloat.

Browse and download with your head and you won't have any problem.

Most people that rip Norton haven't used it in awhile. I had last year's Norton Internet 2009 and this year's too and both were/are great. No problems whatsoever. Not a resource hog like before.

Google it. Maximum PC recommended 2009 and they said they were surprised how effective it was and how much it had changed from previous years.
