What's tying up the resources?

How do I find out what is tying up my computer?... task manager isn't very specific.

From time to time the CPU usage will get pretty high when sitting idle even... 80% on one core and 30% on the other for instance. Those numbers are sorta picked out of thin air but are probably pretty close to accurate. But at that time task manager will only show a couple services using 2% or so and that's it.

The worst one is HDD usage. Every couple of hours the HDD will light up solid and everything comes to a screetching halt. Very annoying when I'm trying to watch a movie. I have to pause the movie and walk away for a bit and it usually clears in about 5 to 10 minutes. Task manager shows that svchost is using the HDD during that time. I've tried disabling indexing but that has had no effect.

System specs are:
E3110 on a Asus P5E-VM HDMI w/2GB of RAM and a Sapphire HD4670 running on Vista x86 and a couple WD 640GB drives. All stock speeds.

Do you have shadowcopies or backups enabled?

I read someplace one time, what was causing that.. but my bad memory do not remember witch Windows Services is responsible
but I notice something.
on Win7 if you disable the indexing ..the drive activity is not showing..
on vista.. I see the same steady led even with indexing disable.

was not looking far more because it's only my wife who use vista. for a light resource usage..
