Default Windows 7 Sort-By

Let me first clear this up.

I know in Windows 7 you can turn off auto arrange on the desktop. This is a simple right click option of turning off Sort By. Do not reply to me with instructions on how to do this on the desktop because this is not what I am asking, it's obvious I already know how since I just explained it to you.

Windows 7 appears to not let you turn off autoarrange in folders with the exception of profile's desktop. If you had a folder called Beer in My Documents which contained a bunch of pictures of your vast beer collection, there is no way to stop Windows 7 from sorting it ascending, descending, by size, etc... If I wanted to have say, all my Heineken thumbnails grouped together if they had non contiguous names, sizes, etc... Does anyone know a way to restore this basic functionality? Vista allowed you to do this, 7 ought to as well. I'm sure someone at Microsoft meant well, but if I can't do basic things like grouping my own icons outside of the desktop, I don't really need a GUI.

Hrmmm

I haven't noticed that but I'm still running Vista on my own machine.

Wow I never really noticed until you told me with this post... Personally I let Windows sort everything because my manual arrangements were ruined each time I changed resolution (e.g. gaming).
Anyway, a little searching found that it was likely disabled intentionally: Why has the ability to deactivate Auto Arrange been removed in Windows 7?

Ya I'm interested in this as well. I just installed Win7 on the weekend and I can't find a way to override the auto arrange either. It has a ton of different arrange parameter settings but "off" doesn't seem to be one of them...
