ahh, like I said i am still fairly new to this. and from what I understood R2 was supposed to be the X64 designation according to the majority of my class so I thought it was not important to designate each.

Many small business use XP as OS for their files server. In my book if it's only use for Network files storage , it's a server.

partially true for 2003, but not for 2008 , you still have 32 bits in 2003 R2, but the x64 version of 2003, was only available with the release of R2

We've got a real mish mash of stuff at work. We tried to take an all MS approach at one point but the licensing fees we're killing us. TTBOMK we presently are running:

assorted Server2000/2003
variations of Linux, probably whoever set's it up preferance
OSX Server (some genius thought this was a good idea for our mail server)

To the best of my knowledge:

Server 2008 R2 only comes in x64. <- This was why it was rumoured Windows 7 would be only x64
Server 2008 came in 32bit and 64bit.
Server 2003 R2 came in 32bit and 64bit.
Server 2003 came in 32bit and 64bit (released a bit after I think).

R2 and x64 don't come hand-in-hand IMO. R2 basically means the kernel has been updated to a newer version, and thus you need to buy a new license.

ya it was release in 2005, it's why I think it was with the R2. I'm too lazy to go in the garage to check .
but something in my poor memory told me that you may be right, it's like they release it a little bit before the R2
