Default Windows 7 Key

I just wanted to know, are buying Windows 7 keys off Ebay legal(they go for15-20dollars)? Cause I could save a lot of money by buying the key, then borrowing the DVDs from a friend.

I have not read anything about that, but I am quite confident it is 100% illegal. Those are possibly just technet keys or something similar.

+1; they are probably violations on volume licenses or something similar. I'd assume if that was the case, you may see your OS going into limited mode after M$ finds out about the key and disables it.

Better yet, they might not even be valid keys.

You will likely find the key(s) will be blacklisted my M$ at some point. The deal is too good to be valid and not available through resellers like NCIX - who are very good at bringing us very good deals when they can. NOD32 comes to mind - who have now dropped their OEM availabliity and the extremely good deal the Netlink group of companies used to offer it for.

Actually I check on Ebay they have a lot, here some FAQ,

Q: Is this a trial key or will the key expire?
A: No, this is not a trial key. The key will never expire.

Q: Where do the keys come from?
A: The keys are issued directly from Microsoft and only after payment is received.

Q: Is the key legitimate?
A: Yes, the is 100% legitimate and authentic.

Q: Will the key pass Microsoft’s Window Genuine Advantage (WGA)?
A: Yes, the key will pass WGA as the key is issued directly from Microsoft.

Q: Has the key ever been issued to anyone else or previously activated?
A: No, the key has never been issued to anyone else, nor has it been previously activated. Key is not retrieved from Microsoft’s system until such time as buyer purchases key.

Q: Will the key allow for product updates?
A: Yes, the key will allow for product updates for the life of the computer or installation.

Q: Will the key allow for tech support from Microsoft?
A: Yes, the key will allow for telephone tech support directly from Microsoft.

Q: Will you send me a copy of the software?
A: No, this listing is not for a copy of the software.

Q: Do I need to already own a copy of Widows 7 Home Premium?
A: Yes, you need to have a RETAIL copy of Windows 7 Home Premium that you can use to install the software on your PC. You will use the product key purchased from us to activate the software.

Q: Why would someone want to purchase a product key without purchasing the software?
A: Most people who purchase additional product keys do so to install and activate the software on a second or third PC in the home.

Q: Why are the keys so inexpensive compared to purchasing in a retail store or online?
A: We purchase volume keys and pass the savings along to our customers. In a retail store, you are purchasing a copy of the software and packaging that you may already own.

I once bought a vmware license from ebay and it was fake. The guy sent it to me and got kicked off of ebay. For fun I called up vmware and asked if they could verify it was a real license. He was like "yeah its valid. Why wouldn't it be?". After 10 minutes of arguing I got him to send me something in writing my key was valid...

The moral of the story is buying software on ebay is bad, and vmware is dumb and never heard of keygens.

I'm not quite sure how a VLK key is going to activate a Retail Home Premium install. Wasn't even aware VLKs were sold for Home Premium.
