My System Specs

Thumbs down Catalyst 9.12 + Radeon 5870 = FAIL

I am absolutely disgusted with AMD. These idiots have still not put out a fully stable driver for the Radeon 5800 series!

I have a Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X card on a modern LGA1156 build with Windows 7 64-bit. With the Catalyst 9.11 most games would work fine with a few crashing occasionally here and there (e.g. GTA4).

I installed Catalyst 9.12 and it's a complete disaster. Both my displays begin to stutter as if I'm getting 1 frame per second and then I get a blue screen of death (BSOD) with atik...or some other ATI file. The most annoying part is that it crashes when I'm NOT playing a game.

Seriously, what kind of idiots work in the driver department over at AMD? This is unacceptable. I've rolled back to 9.11 for now.

Just installed today. Not that it really means anything but my WEI score went up by 1.6 points with this driver. Weird.

Relax MarkOne....I'm just givin him the gears. He totally has the right to complain , and I fully agree.

The fact that video card companies can't seem to create stable drivers is really annoying.

I'm running 9.12 on an overclocked 5850 and everything is 100% stable.

I am relax.... the was for the overprice card not for what you said , $ 500 for a 5870 ( tax , shipment) is too much. the 4890 was under $ 300 , it's not costing $ 200 more to make a 5870 , they abuse the fact that NVIDIA have nothing for the moment, NVIDIA will do the same also. I will not get into that boat, I will use my 22" insted of my 24",

I get that point but I usually try to be a "second wave" early adopter. In other words, I wait a month or two and THEN buy the stuff - not even because of the money so much but so that I might get a "later built" version of whatever the product is.

Anyway, whatever the case might be, it is frustrating when a company releases shiny new hardware but skimps on the actual drivers which would allow you to make proper use of that hardware. And yes, after shelling out around $500 for this card, I would have expected more proper support...in the form of a driver that actually allows me to at least boot into Windows.

I've owned a couple of nVidia cards in the past - 6600GT, 8600GT and 8800GTS 320MB and what I at least remember was that you COULD boot into Windows successfully.

UPDATE: The 9.12 "hotfix" drivers also seem to work reasonably for me.
