I really don't know what would qualify as best, but iTunes will do it for you.

Find the iTunes preferences and look under the "general" tab for the "Import settings..." button. Choose what format you would like to import your files into (in this case I imagine it would be the MP3 encoder) choose a setting and click ok. Click ok one more time to close your preference window. In iTunes, find your m4a files in your library or import them in. Right click on a file and choose "Create MP3 version" from the pop-up menu. You should be able to do this for a bunch of songs at once, even.

Again, maybe not the "best", but I wouldn't call iTunes scrapware, even if you didn't like it very much.

MediaCoder audio edition should work if you don't want to install ITunes
MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder - MediaCoder official website

I just got some clips recorded in wmv. They are HD clips 1280 by 720 and when i first import them into Final Cut Pro they look brilliant, really great quality. But every time i render any clip the quality goes downhill alotttt. I converted a clip to .avi and it did the same thing. I changed the settings of the sequence to match that of the clip. Does anyone know what could be up?
Thanks
