Default Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN)

I'm running a laptop with one of those hidden OEM partitions with the OS on it. I'm wondering if I run DBAN will it wipe the entire drive along with the OS partition, or just the primary partition?

Dban will nuke the whole drive as it does a sector by sector wipe and doesn't care about partitions. It takes longer but short of setting your hdd on fire with some thermite :) it's the next best thing.

I see. What if I want to wipe the data on the drive but keep the hidden OS partition? Can I do that?

you will probably need something more advanced (in terms of features) than DBAN. i am not sure but think acronis disk director allows you to do this. I think it costs around 40-50 USD. or sometimes they have a deal if buy it as a bundle with true image.

I thought DBAN was like unleashing a nuclear holocaust on your HDD. It wipes everything out.

Maybe I am wrong...

I am quite confident it will wipe everything, I used it a couple months and had no options, only which form of rewrite it performs to clear old data.

it over writes every sector with a 1, 0, random or something else depending on the secuirty profile and you set the number of iterations to 99 if like but that would take a couple of years to run on the large drives we have today.

You could run Eraser from a WinPE USB stick or CD. If you boot the PC with any Linux live CD you could do a destructive test with badblocks on the partition you want wiped.
