Default upgrading to windows 7

So, who here is upgrading to 7? I have an OEM version of vista on my PC, so i am a little unsure of how to go about it. if i have problems that require a reinstall (after i upgrade my oem version to 7), can i reinstall it with the upgrade disk? or would i need to install the OEM again, then upgrade to 7 again? also, im thinking of doing a custom install of 7 (so i can redo my partitions, i made the OS partition way too small, do i even have to make a partition for my os if i only have one physical drive?), what would be the easiest way to backup important files. sorry for all the noob questions, but im not that smart when ti comes to the software side of building a pc (built mine in december last year >.

Personally, I never upgrade - I always do clean fresh installs. I'll be running 7 on all my future builds. As far as the upgrade/recovery paths, I don't know. To answer your O.S. question: you do not need a separate partition for your O.S., in a single-boot setup. It doesn't hurt, but it's not necessary. For backups, I always recommend a separate stand-alone drive. I've had good luck (knock wood) with WD MyBook 1TB models for around $125.00. They give you the options of storing your goodies off-site in case of catastophe, or bringing them to a friends' house to share.

yea, the main reason i wanted to do a fresh install was because i felt my OS partition was too small. but i set virtual memory (i have enough ram i think, might get 2 more 2gb sticks) to 0, i reinstalled office to my e drive and i reinstalled some programs that i must have accidentally put on my c drive. So alot of space opened up on my c drive, so i think a simple upgrade should be sufficient enough.

K guys, need soem help here. i cannot do the custom as easily as i though, since my c drive does not have 8gb free. it says i need to boot from a disk or drive. i downloaded windows 7 from the windows site, and i downloaded a total of three files, setup1.box, setup2.box and a installation file (you know the executable you click to get the installation going). are those three files all i need to put on dvd, then boot from disk drive in bios?

You can, you have to click the options button on the screen before the install, but after the 'install now' button.

How I made a bootable Win7 install DVD from the Digital River download maybe this will help others, but i was able to make an iso using this method, and i found it much easier.
