As long as the external enclosure is eSata you'l be fine.

You'd probably have to re-install anyways, because your laptop has different chipset drivers than your X58. It's not impossible to workaround in XP or Vista (boot to safe mode on old system, delete drivers, move drive to new system, boot), but I've never tried it on a Windows 7 install, and for the 20 minutes it takes to install 7 on a HDD, it's probably not worth your time.

I've moved Vista drives very easily....

Rip the Vista containing drive out of old machine...

Install in new machine and boot up....

Stare lovingly at the black screen that Vista will boot up into...

Come back in 15 minutes, but keep watching the HD light.... (it's installing drivers!) When HD light slows significantly or stops completely....

Restart machine using: "Windows key" -> "U key" -> "R key" -> "K key".....

When Vista restarts it'll have readjusted itself to the new machine and boots sucessfully.....

Enjoy....!

At least, this is what I've found :thumb:

why not just load the drivers before you pull it out of the old machine and when you boot up the new machine vista/7 will load the right drivers for the hardware

If ever you are interested, Linux can be installed to pretty much any machine with a HDD, from Xbox and PS3 to supercomputers and smartphones.
