Default Installing Win98SE on a sata machine

Hi guys,

Just as I'm thinking about moving to Windows 7, I need to install Win98 to a Acer Aspire AX1300. Unfortunately, I can't find sata drivers. So, I boot on the WIn98 boot cd, choose the installation option. Then it says that it can't load the cd-rom driver (cuz it's a ide driver and the cd-rom is sata). So I guess I'm stuck as long as I don't find a sata driver.

Anyone has one?

As far as I'm aware, 98 does not have SATA/SCSI support.

If you need to run 98 for whatever profound reason, just use virtualization within Windows 7. Grab something like VirtualPC or VirtualBox.

Is there an option in the bios to set the sata to IDE mode?

99% of motherboards that have SATA ports have "IDE Emulation" mode which allows an operating system to see a SATA port as a IDE port.

I still imagine you're going to have a ton of issues getting it up and running even if you get it installed. I highly doubt it supports any of the hardware in that PC, and getting drivers is probably impossible too. Thus why virtualization would probably end up being just as fast or faster since you'll just be using generic drivers.

I believe windows 98 memory limit was 512MB due to a bug, over that it would tell you "not enough memory" which is pretty ironic

Id say just go with a virtual machine and save some time and headaches.

I went your way and tried to set up a VM. I'm wondering why vm emulate hardware that is not supported by the drivers onto the windows cd....

Damn, i still must find the win98 drivers :(
