My System Specs

Default Laptops and OS's

Hi, Anyone familiar with the major brand names out there, HP, Dell, Acer laptops operating systems?
My concern is I want XP Pro on whatever I buy and they all come Vista. I need the XP for compatibility with others at office. Is it a no brainer to install XP on an laptop from these manufactures?

On Dell some of the business class machines come with a Vista downgrade option meaning you get XP installed and the unit comes with media for both XP and Vista.

The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

Doing a DIY downgrade to XP on any laptop really depends on driver availability. It is possible and there are many guides out there pointing you to drivers for particular models but I fear many of the newest consumer models may have les and less XP compatibility.

^^ Not true. Laptops are not desktops... drivers for Vista doesn't mean there's drivers for XP. You may lose some functionality by downgrading if there are no supported drivers for those functions (i.e. media keys, hot keys, other hardware etc...).

What about running XP virtually in VirtualPC or the like? Though that would depend on what you require XP for.

Lenovo is pretty damn near close to the only manufacturer left.

H3LL claims it, but they don't actually have any (official) XP drivers.

I spoke to their "Support" (which was useless I might add) and they basically said that there's no such thing as a downgrade as there's no drivers.
Oh and according to "support" if I bork my OS somehow I have to repurchase it.

I deal with a lot of Dell laptops due to work and so far haven't had any issues downgrading to xp. The X1330 was a bit of a pain but still got it done.
