I wouldn't buy Vista if XP does everything you want. I bought Vista because I wanted to play around with it and it later came on my laptop. If you have money to spend and want to try it then its not a bad OS as I like it, but I only spent money on it really because I wanted to learn about it.

It kind of feels like Windows XP will become the AK-47 of the OS world

that is, it'll be old and basic but work like a charm

To answer your question I'd definitely stay with XP until Windows 7 comes out. I feel pretty much the same way about Vista that enaberif does, but that hate doesn't quite extend to 7, even though they are almost the same thing.

Another vote for XP. Save your money and put that extra cash back into your new system!

I'm withholding judgment on Vista 2.0 / win 7 until it comes out officially. I'm doing this for the simple reason w2k was better than XP until SP2 came out, THEN XP was better and in all likelihood win7 is just vista SP2 w/ a new name:)~

XP +1

Vista isn't that bad but XP is just plain faster.

If you feel you do want more eye candy there are plenty of applications out there to modify the UI to suit your needs, with less of a performance hit than Vista's Areo.
