Default Fastest OS for asus eee pc 1000ha

hey guys, i just bought that brand new eee asus pc 1000ha and it works like a charm, it does everything it is supposed to.

Heres my problem, very, very often, the cpu's speed is hightly decreased by programs running on the background or just windows downloads starting for no reason when the automatic updates are disabled. Thoses downloads or background programs are eating most of my cpu power making it almost useless at some times.

That really bugs me, and reminds me why im using a modified version of win xp on my desktop. Im looking for an os w/o the windows updates and programs poop. Fast, reliable, safe (if pirated, modified or whatever), well i think you get my point.

So heres the 100$ question.

Out of ALL the OS we can buy or find on the web. Pirated, modified or legit.
Which operating system should i use on that laptop?

THANKS

Ps; my asus eee only has 1gb of ram.

Use Asus's Linux OS. Free, fast, and built for your EEE. Or try Ubuntu or Xubuntu.

Frankly? Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP should run okay on it, or if your feeling frisky, how about a custom modified version of Windows 98. (you need your own iso/cd to create a modified/patched iso in case that page isn't clear)

If you want to run windows I'm recommend Windows 2000.

I've heard that people got Vista to run very quickly in a netbook. Of course, that person had 2GB RAM instead of 1GB, so you might want to make that investment as well. 2GB RAM is only going to be $25 on Boxing Day at Future Shop and Best Buy.

Also, if you want to keep Windows XP, try disabling all those "special features". You can do this by going to Start> right click "My Computer" > Advanced > under "Performance" click Setting > uncheck all visual effects. That should speed up your Windows XP by a bit.

Slackware works well. There is a Slack derivative for the Eee's too called Slackee - SlackEee Linux Project - Home (though I've not tried it)
