Default Media + Video Rendering PC

Hi all, I'm piecing together a pc build for my sister-in-law. Her current PC, an Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz (Northwood) S478 and old ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9600 XT, has finally seen it's last leg. She wants to upgrade to something new that will allow her to record her TV shows and also render video as well as run Auto CAD. For space she wants to put it into a HTPC case.

The parts she is keeping is as follows:
WD 500GB 7200rpm SATAII
HP 16X DVD +/-RW

Her only other requirement was that it uses the new All-in-Wonder. She has tried the video card and separate Hauppage TV tuner card in the past and doesn't like it.

Here are the parts that I put together for her.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - $205.91
Gigabyte GA-EG43M-S2H mATX - $107.67
Mushkin EM PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18 - $83.96
Diamond All in Wonder Radeon 3650 Premium 512MB - $208.00
Nmedia HTPC-1000B HTPC Case mATX Black - $124.20
Corsair HX520 520W - $108.15

Sub Total: $837.89
Tax: $41.89
Total: $879.78

ncix has the Q6600 on for 199 right now ;D save you a whole six bucks

i'm not so sure about the Q6600 though, where that proc really shines is its overclockablility, you cant OC it in a mini case, so its going to be a crutch for most apps (compared to the e8400) i know the newer versions of auto cad will utilize the 4 cores, but unless she's doing "alot" of rendering the e8400 will trump the quad all day long. and run cooler/quieter at the same time.

if shes recording alot of tv shows (and saving them) she might want to grab a TB drive too. even if she records/watches/deletes them she should grab a seperate OS drive or storage drive for all the fragging she's going to do to it with the constant big writes and deletes

She's going to be getting a smaller drive for the OS. The video rendering will probably utilize more make use of more than 2 cores not sure though. I'll have to do some more research into that though cause the E9400 is cheaper than the Q6600 by a few cents at DC.

I'm assuming you mean the E8400 not a E9400, for auto cad my E8400 does great mind you the auto cad I have is 1 yr old. But for video rendering I would think a Q6600 would be the way to go.

For a HTPC case I would recommend you go with the cooler-running 45nm quads. The Q9400 looks promising at $279 in this week's sale on NCIX: NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 Quad Core Processor LGA775 2.66GHZ Yorkfield 1333FSB 6MB Retail Box - BX80580Q9400 In Canada.

yeah, thats what i was thinking too, i can imagine how warm (and loud) a quad would get with stock cooling with 4 cores flat out in an htpc case lol to be honest though, i didnt find my Q9450 to run any cooler than my q6600 did. matter of fact i thought it was a tad warmer. (i know that statement goes against convention, but it was my experience. and yes i did try reseating and using the same cooler and thermal paste too) i mighta got a sucky chip though cause i couldnt oc it all that well either.
