Considering the type of functions he'll be performing on his computer, he should either find something used that isn't too old or head down to a local electronics store(Best Buy/Futureshop) and buy the cheapest thing carry but on the other hand you could probably build a custom low-end rig(a low-end CPU, 1GB ram, a cheap GPU, etc).

This is definitely possible. You just need to know where to look! Price match everything. I know this is sort of an old article (September 2007) but it will give you an idea of what can be do with such a small amount of money:

Most definitely doable assuming you don't need a monitor:

That comes to $398.25 using NCIX prices. There's a MIR on the RAM I believe. Also if you price match it'll probably become even less. Leaves you with some money to buy an OS, keyboard/mouse/speakers or whatever else.

Hey I need to do this in the near future too, I'm looking to see if anyone has any good suggestions on a Motherboard (something that isn't too crappy), and a processor (also the reason for the processor.... like why not something more or less powerful).

nope she completely wants a new computer. Is P4 2Ghz enough for simple tasks? She stated that she just watch youtube, use MS Excel and Word, and surfing the net. Thanks guys:clap:
