Default The Itch to Upgrade

I have the itch to upgrade my current rig since I'm replacing the HSF. The wife is going to kill me but ah well you only live once.

With the plethora of new hardware out and the price dropping on old hardware it makes for some tough decisions. So here is the choices I have come up with.

1.
  • Processor: Q6600 which will be purchased from a fellow board member.
  • HSF: TRUE 120
  • Motherboard: Keep my current Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
  • Vidoe Card: Ditch (sell) my 9600 GT and get a HD 4870
2.
  • Processor: Q6600 which will be purchased from a fellow board member.
  • HSF: TRUE 120
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5E LGA775 X38 ($250)
  • Video Card: 2 x HD3870 ($145/each)
3.
  • Processor: Q6600 which will be purchased from a fellow board member.
  • HSF: TRUE 120
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5E LGA775 X38 ($250)
  • Video Card: 2 x HD4850 ($210/each)
4.
  • Processor: Q6600 which will be purchased from a fellow board member.
  • HSF: TRUE 120
  • Motherboard: ASUS Rampage Formula X48 ($329)
  • Video Card: 2 x HD3870 ($145/each)
5.
  • Processor: Q6600 which will be purchased from a fellow board member.
  • HSF: TRUE 120
  • Motherboard: ASUS Rampage Formula X48($329)
  • Video Card: 2 x HD4850 ($210/each)
Which option would be the best bang for my buck? I plan on playing games like COD 4, GRAW2, Crysis, Assassin's Creed. My monitor is a LG 20" LCD.

The famous itch, just went through the same thing

Are you sure you want a Quad ? for gaming the e8400 is really really nice. Are you going to overclock ?

Also, on a 20 inch lcd, do you really need the CF ?

If you go the 2 X 3870 way, look around for used, they can be bought for lower than 145 $ each. Maybe not on this forum, but look at fleabay for some inspiration.

Also, I saw a lot of 3870X2 go for somewhere around 220-220 $on Ebay. (got mine for 175 $ on local delivery, so it is possible)

And is there a real gain from going to go from P35 to x38 or x48 ? I dont think so. Maybe I am wrong here.

With all those side questions lets not forget my suggestion,

I would keep the board and buy a 4870, just because that card is so nice . It will be less expensive, so the wife will still kill you but maybe she can do it quickly enough so you dont suffer.

1. Buy a E7200 (129.99) or E8400 (189.99) and OC to 4.0ghz

2. Buy one HD4870

3. Keep your gigabyte board

4. Buy a DTEK Fuzion v2, an MCP355 with aftermarket top, an MCW60 and an MCR220/320 depending on the size of your case and be truly satisfied with your killer rig

More factors now to include, I don't think crossfire is really needed one HD 4870 I'm sure would do the trick. As for watercooling, I have the CM690

Yes I agree with the above for now.

Stick to 1 HD4870 at the moment. Perhaps watercool the cpu for about $200. As for cpus if youve got a good deal on the quad and you know you can oc to about 3.4 in water then id consider it-BUT faster dual cores are still a great option in gaming.

Might be worth considering an aftermarket cooler for the gpu too and hopefully with more software support you can oc more than now.

In the future Id then ditch the board and go 4870 XF when the X48's come down in price. Personally Ive go my eye on the DFI T2R X48 for a future buy.

Now another option would be to sell my P35-DS3L get a EVGA 750i FTW (which from my understanding what I've read does run each lane at full 16x) and get a second 9600 GT or would one 4870 destroy 9600 GT in SLI?

I'd think a 4870 would destroy SLI since not all games benefit from SLI...

I'd say get the Q6600, Rampage Formula and a single HD4870. Or maybe a X48 DFI board instead. Depends if you need all the features of the Rampage.

Same here.

The DS3L is an awesome board;
The Quad is overkill, but still a good bang-for-the-buck option;
HD4870 all the way;
TRUE, which can be bought used for cheap, or I have an IFX-14 that is available too.

John, will that IFX-14 fit in my CM690?
