Default got the itch to upgrade

Hey guys, it has been about 2 years since my last build and I am starting to get the itch. Question is, with todays tech what would I see in performance increase versus cash output. I game at 1440p and have a 144 hz freesync panel, I would like to game at 90 to 100 fps on modern games at 1440p. Budget is around 3,000 but spending less is an option XD

Wait for Ryzen 5 and see if that floats your boat. I expect some gaps between the Ryzen 5 and whatever i5 they are priced against. You pretty much have to ask yourself how much is that gap worth.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't ryzen 5 the same IPC core as ryzen 7 except with 4 cores 8 threads? And if that's the case the Intel I7 7700k a superior gaming processor for the cash? Plus with the current ram issues ryzen platform is experiencing it may be Intel as the best platform for gaming, even with ryzen being cheaper.

My vote is sell the sli gtx 970 and get a gtx 1080Ti. Honestly that will probably get you all the gains you want.

Are you using the 3570k at 4.5ghz still? If so, it would be fine. A full platform upgrade may get you single digit % increase in certain CPU bound titles, but the GPU upgrade on its own will be the 95+% answer without the big price tag of a full overhaul. You will be GPU limited almost all the time running 1440p.

However, I just noticed you are running a freesync monitor, so it would be worth waiting until AMD vega gets released to see how that is before you make a final GPU decision...if you can wait just a little longer. Otherwise the 1080Ti is great and I doubt you will regret it, but obviously no freesync.

Even at 4.2 you should be fine.

Worst case scenario you aren't happy with just the graphics card upgrade (which I doubt will happen). If you aren't happy for some reason, you have an amazing GPU to slide over to a new build when you want to. With a $3000 limit it won't be an issue to do a full build if you have to.

EDIT: and if the rumour mill is to be believed, Vega is benchmarking between a gtx 1080 and 1080Ti, so it would fit the bill for what you want as well.

To get the most of your 1440p freesync monitor you'll have to wait for Vega. You'll have plenty of room to build a beast of a machine with $3k budget.

Only reason to upgrade is for either better multi-tasking via a drop in 3770k or for a platform update (and better multi-tasking) by going newer intel or Ryzen..
But if your a person who runs a game and not much else, this is less of a factor.

I think flipping the 970's for a single card is viable also making the sync tech of the monitor less important than the high fps but as said you may be able to get both with Vega.
