Default To Upgrade Now or Later

I have been debating on upgrading my PC. Here are the specs:

Intel Core i7-4770K
Asus Maximus VI Gene
PNY Geforce GTX 970
Samsung 850 EVO 120GB
G.Skill 8GB DDR3-1600
WD VelociRaptor 500GB
Corsair AX850 80+ Gold
NZXT S340

I use it for gaming @ 1080P (Diablo III, modern FPS games)
Graphic and Web Design

I was thinking if I upgrade now I could only really afford a new motherboard which would basically be going up on generation to a Z97 board. I would like to downsize my rig to mini-itx and have something that can sit on my desk and is portable.

Is it really worth getting a Z97 board now?
Should I wait till Cannonlake comes out and then upgrade everything as I would have more money.

No point in downsizing IMO. mITX isn't really all that much smaller unless you go for a boutique case which will push it even further out of your budget once you find you need a smaller PSU, smaller CPU heatsink, smaller GPU....

I was thinking going with the Fractal Design S Nano or the Phanteks Evolv ITX. 1.) because I like the aesthetics and 2.) I like how they are both great for custom water cooling setup.

It's for looks only, so only you know if it's worth the cost to downsize/have a new look. There is nothing performance wise to justify it, so it's never going to financially make sense. The only thing I can see that you may want to do is add another 8gb ram, but it's not a big deal (I still run 8gb).

It is really is for aesthetics, Whether I upgrade now or later I am going mini-itx. I guess my main question is should I upgrade to Skylake or Kaby Lake or wait for Cannonlake?

Do you really need to upgrade? Those look like specs that will dominate 1080p for another 2-3 years....If you wanna downsize just the case then sure. If you want to really get a nice upgrade perhaps even a new 1440p monitor would bring a new enjoyable experience to your gaming and productivity.
