Default Game Development/Gaming Build

Now that I've got a decent job and the money's coming in, I'm finally looking to do a hardware refresh. Here's my current build, with a budget of $2500-$3000 all in:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4930K Hexacore, Socket LGA2011 (3.4GHz)
  • MOBO: Asus P9X79 LE Socket LGA2011, Intel X79 chipset (quad-channel ram dimms)
  • CASE: CoolerMaster HAF 932 Advanced
  • RAM: 2 x Kingston HyperX Blu (2 x 8GB), DDR3 1600MHz CL10 (32GB total)
  • SSD: Intel 530 Series 240 GB SSD
  • GFX: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X BF4 Limited Edition 4GB GDDR5
  • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750G (750w)
  • Misc parts from current build such as DVD drives, 3tb wd green, fans
The machine will be used for some pretty heavy duty stuff... running UE4/UDK, Maya, Photoshop, Firefox, and probably a few misc things at the same time means I'm not willing to budge on the amount of RAM (though the make and model I am.) I also need a strong processor and graphics card.

Problem with LGA2011 is that it is to be discontinued soon, and doesn't support the higher bandwidth'ed PCI-E 3.0. I would Either go for the Haswell Z97 this month or wait for LGA2011's successor, Haswell-E to be released in the 3rd Q of 2014.

I understand your focus on performance but that case is just extremely outdated and is not much of an upgrade from your Antec 900. Corsair Graphite 760 and Carbide Air 450 (unless you plan on installing muti HDDs) are nice high-end choices.

Bump up the RAM to higher hz than 1600. Prices don't jump much - if at all- all the way to 2400. G.Skill Trident or Kingston HyperX Beast.

Is your video card the blue Sapphire Toxic version? Well it should be, otherwise Powercolor PCS+, or the thinner Gigabyte WF if you need more space on your motherboard. Canucks residing in Toronto can advise you who has the best after service. That's important too.

That build is begging for a high res monitor and a second video card + beefier PSU, but that's the gamer in me talkin. Good luck!

How much game development are you doing? Any 3D work? I'm more surprised you didn't include a more workstation-esque card to your lineup considering you have Maya in the list. Hell I'd consider dropping to a 4770k and add a low end firepro, or even upgrade to a titan. I'd imagine the GPU acceleration would be worth it.

You mentioned you have a job now - intel is having a deal on the 14th where if you work in the electronic/retail sector you'll get an amazing discount for 4770k/4930k. You might want to look into that if you qualify.
Amazing as in like 80% off brand new CPU (4930k for around $100-200)

(First off, I wouldn't drop that much coin with Haswell-E right around the corner)
Honestly, I would recommend a more workstation build for what you're trying to accomplish.
I'd go:

Xeon E3-1270v3
Asus Sabertooth Z97
2 sets of Crucial Ballistix Sport (32GB)
2 Nvidia 760 GTX
Another monitor.

2 Cards let you GPU Render on one and still work on scenes on the other. They'll also SLI if you're into playing games.
I wouldn't drop a ton of money all in one go, save some for software and later upgrades.

AAA Developers are targeting Xbone and PS4 and still have the X360 and PS3 to work with until 2016
Any Solid computer is going to be able to Play those class of games better than Console Quality and Be able to Design assets for them.

Haswell Z97 is socket 1150 I think, right?

Their best cpu I can find is the 4770k @ 3.5GHz. In the reviews I found, it barely wins the single core performance benchmark, and (for obvious reasons) falls below the hexacore in multithreading.

I don't know if I want to wait for the Q3 release (it would probably be the smart thing to do, but I need a new build very badly).

Aside from being discontinued, I don't really see any downside to my current choice, unless I'm missing something?

Aside from that, I'm going to research those case selections and the suggested PSUs. (this is a very slow process at the moment)

I built my rig over a 12 month period. I had to wait on Rive Be. Ivy-e and corsair and evga each part was in limbo till they decided canada was worth selling hardware in. Next build will be a lil Xeon server for surveillance recording. Seems theives be everywere these days lol.

The Sabertooth Z97 is socket 1150. Z97 should let you step into the next platform Broadwell.

As far as CPUs go you probably could even look into a Xeon E3-1240V3 it's i7 equivalent and will run 8 threads.
Game development revolves around "Realtime Rendering" - so your GPUs are mainly going to be involved more so than CPU.
And even in Final rendering "Cut Scenes" a lot of artists are using Renders based around CUDA.

Anything for content creating is going to be a race car compared to the Core 2 Duo your currently running.
As far as playing games there's diminishing returns on anything over an i5. Quite a few games run really well on i3-4130 which is 2 Core / 4 threads.

The Consoles are based on "Jaguar cores" and they are only clocked at 1.6Ghz. There's 8 cores but they are very slow compared to current PC CPUs.
Hexacore is unnecessary at this point on a PC.
