Default Mobo needed to unlock an Athlon II x3

Need recommendations for motherboards that will allow me to attempt to unlock an Athlon II x3 I have. Prefer Gigabyte, micro ATX or full ATX, don't need anything fancy. Successful unlockers say they are using DDR3 but I thought this chip only uses DDR2. Would like to use DDR3 if I can. Live in Florida so buying in U.S. and hoping to buy this week.

Thanks,

Mac

The Athlon II X3 does support DDR3... AMD Athlon? II Processor Model Numbers and Comparisons
...but if you're going to buy DDR3, get it for a CPU/motherboard that would be worth upgrading to.

Unless you're buying used (e.g. close to free), the money is better spent on saving for an i3 and the cheapest socket 1150 motherboard you can find, which will outperform the Athlon II X"4" and be a lot better on power consumption doing so.

An Athlon X3's single-threaded performance is just so poor compared to newer CPUs that even after the unlock the computer will feel slow.

Yeah there's a couple of those amd chips that support both ddr2 and ddr3 memory. I know first hand.

You're gonna have a hard time finding good used gear. It got eaten up by cyrpto miners. A cheap amd board can be awesome for mining.

Consider getting an i3.

Thanks for the input. Been thinking about i3 and some AMD chips. Always comes down to what am I willing to pay and how long sockets will be around.

I have an Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 and I have an Athlon II X3 450 on it that unlocks to a Phenom II X4 B50 (3.2 GHz) and is possible to overclock even when unlocked to quad core. However I would much more appreciate to have a Core i3 instead, I had both, and I can tell you that the i3 is superior in every way, (especially gaming) I had the i3-3225. Don`t think too much between Athlon II and i3, go i3 with eyes closed!

If your buying a new motherboard and ram I wouldn't invest in AM2+/AM3 socket. Go to go to something more modern. A cheap 1150 motherboard will run around the same cost as what you want and you will need to buy ddr3 regardless. The only added cost would be the cpu...you could get a cheap pentium for now and it would probably only run you an extra $60 in the US. If you don't mind used you could probably get an i3 or i5/ motherboard/ram bundle on the cheap as well (likely ivy bridge on socket 1155).
