My System Specs

Default Getting rid of my Gaming Rig, and building a new HTPC

So, life has changed much over the last few years. My baby is now 15 months old, and it is completely unreasonable of me to think that I can come home from work and jump into a game while my tired and stressed out wife continues to watch a very energetic toddler. Combine that with a decided lack of disposable income, and the fact that my gaming rig is crippled from the loss of a video card and a good display, and I've decided to disassemble my gaming rig.

The parts will be likely just be dispersed among the remaining two rigs in the house. I'd like to sell my Z77A-G45 motherboard and pick up a nice little mITX motherboard instead. Someone willing to trade would be ideal... I'll put my 3770K into the HTPC and at first just run off of the IGP (HD4000). In a couple of months, I'd like to get a lower-mid range graphics card so that I can at least run some games on the TV. It's a lot easier to watch a toddler when you're gaming on a Gamepad and a TV than when you're fully immersed with a mouse/keyboard/headset. The RAID SSD's will likely migrate into the HTPC. The Corsair SSD that exists within the current HTPC is dead slow, and it could use the performance boost. THAT SSD will then migrate to my son's gaming rig, as his SSD, while fast, is currently full, and he could use another gaming drive.

I'll need to pick up a new mITX HTPC case, as the one I currently have is actually an ATX, el-cheap case, and if I'm going to be getting rid of my main gaming rig, I want my HTPC to be a nice one! Any suggestions as for that case? It needs to fit inside an entertainment unit (so in otherwords, not a tower format)

I'm still hesitant to go about this. Part of me remains hopeful that I'll be able to jump back into the hardcore gaming scene, but the rest of me knows this won't happen for at least another half-decade, until my daughter is a little more able to keep herself occupied without constant supervision. Meanwhile, my computer parts would just be getting more and more outdated without seeing any use out of them. It pains me to do this, but at least this way I get to keep myself occupied with building another computer, and I'll have a kick-ass HTPC.

You can hold out a little longer. For the first 6 months of life, they do a lot of sleeping, so you can find opportunities to game. 6 months to one year, they're still not that hard to take care of, and you may still find time to game. After a year though, they've started crawling, and walking. Mine has been walking for two months now, and needs constant attention from one of her parents. When I'm home from work, that would be me!

Congratulations, btw. It will change your life, and you'll be more than happy to give up some gaming for the experience you're about to have.

I have three kids all getting close to the ages of 8, 5, and 2. I can usually find time to game for a few hours once they are all in bed.

theres an easy solution to this of course. Put your kid to bed at 6-6:30 every single night. No they will not get up earlier because of it... they will sleep for 12 hours no problem.

It is good to go back to old/weak hardware from time to time : teaches you to be humble. Heck, I am on a 8800GT right now and dreaming of a 7790, but maybe I should go with an older nVidia with all the pressure on AMD cards from the miners.

Hardcore gaming I would say not, but I wound take your system apart over family. My kids are almost 5 and 2.5 and I game 0.5-2 hours 2-3 times a week. Not a lot, but it's my time...gotta get that once in a while.
