760, 670 or anything similar will be plenty for 1080 res. The chugging in game is either SLI prob with the game or perhaps memory usage. 1GB with everything up is a bit tight.

I'd also ask the friends for at least something for the parts (depending on situation)..
I mean would you take stuff off someone and not offer them anything for it? or be offended if they asked for something to help cover costs.

Good decision. Keeps you with a very well rounded computer...should be a decent all around upgrade.
