My System Specs

Default Looking for build advice for my brother

Now that I am home my brother is wondering if I can build a cheaper/better system then an around 500-700$

He's linked me something that he may be interested in pre-built, though he knows he wants an after-market graphics card
HP Pavilion p7-1549 Desktop Computer (AMD Quad-Core A10-5700 / 1TB / 10GB RAM / Windows 8) : Performance Gaming Computers - Future Shop

What he wants to be able to use the computer for is what I consider basic gaming, namely wants to be able to play SimCity and drive two monitors.

Here's what I've got thinking so far:
Windows 7 or 8 (free I have legit keys)
8GB of Ram (he knows he doesn't need/want as much ram as the futureshop system)
Probably a 650 Ti (keep it around 110$ graphics card)

What I'd like to know is what would be best cpu to help keep my budget lower.

If you're going to put an aftermarket GPU in, there's no point in going with the AMD APU chips. The best part about them is the onboard GPU.

I'm not knocking them, I use the FM2's in all my budget web browser builds.

i3 - 3220 or 3225. Hyperthreading Dual-cores.

As said above...APU are great if you want an integrated gpu build, but if you are going to a dedicated gpu, then switch to an i3 or if at all possible an i5.

+1 for i3 / cheaper i5

Would definitely suggest getting a z77 board though for a drop-in upgrade down the line and usb3, pci-e3, TRIM, etc

Alternatively, looked second-hand? Much value to be had buying someone else's greatest from the last gen.

Really for his uses, make sure you squeeze in an SSD as it will make more difference than the processor or GPU (unless sim city has changed allot)
It doesn't have to be top end by any means but it will lift any budget rig to really snappy and make happy users.

My brother is looking for all new parts so second-hand parts aren't an option at all.

I was wondering if an i3 would be good enough to last him quite a few years as the cheapest i5 I can find is the i5 3350P.

He also probably won't be caring much for usb3, pic-e3. Not quite sure what sort of SSD I can squeeze into the budget, here is what I have so far:

Intel Core i5 3350P 187$
MSI B75MA-P45 mATX LGA1155 B75 DDR3 70$
Kingston HyperX Blu Black Series 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9 DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit 60$
Corsair CX Series CX430M 430W ATX 12V 80 Plus Bronze Modular Power Supply 50$ (would love to find a cheaper option)
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM 64MB SATA 6Gbps 3.5IN Internal Hard Drive - OEM 68$
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost OC 1098MHZ 2GB 6GHZ GDDR5 2xDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Video Card 175$ (maybe go with a 650 Ti to lower costs a bit)
Bitfenix Prodigy mITX MINI-ITX Tower Case Arctic White 1X5.25EXT 5X3.5INT No PS Top USB3.0 HD Audio 60$

Total: 670$ before taxes and rebates, slightly 70$ over high limitof budget (600$)

Something along these lines would fit your budget perfectly:

AMD FX-4300 Quad Core
ASUS M5A97 R2.0
Corsair XMS3 CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM
Corsair CX Series CX430
MSI Radeon HD 7790 1050MHZ 1GB 6.0GHZ
Corsair Carbide Series 200R

Total: $~600 depending on sales/price matching.

An interesting option, though hoping to find more of an mATX case or just a smaller ATX case in general.

This...just with a 1TB WB Black instead of 1TB Seagate. The longer warranty may come in handy. ;)
