My System Specs

Default Doing a re-build.

My good friend Killswitch, has agreed to help me beef up my gaming rig a little bit. It took a long time for me to get into building, and upgrading etc.,and now that I'm hooked, here's what we are planning to do. The Rampage 4 Extreme x79 mobo,a 3930K CPU,and GSkill TridentX F3 ram. I'm going to stay with my Antec 920 cooler,Video cards, sound card etc. That should keep me in the right part of the curve,at least for now. A couple of members here, including Killswitch, convinced me that doing this is the way to go,sooo...here I go!! Thanks to those that gave me advice.

Think as soon as you said you were going SLi Titans I mentioned X79 ;)

You guys blew me off saying it wasn't necessary, funny how the "upgrade bug" always gets the better of people ;)

Now, impress us and put that sucker together yourself, post pics!!!

I for sure didn't mean to blow you off. Nor did Killswitch. The upgrade I'm doing, is still not necessary at all. It's just that damn "upgrade bug" you mentioned. Thanks for you're input. You,and a couple others had a lot to do with my doing this minor upgrade. By minor,I mean a minor difference in performance.

FYI
Beat price I've found so far:

RIVE $420
I7 3930k $549

Shopbot.ca is your "friend". Your absolutely right, you won't notice gains "gaming", but you'll see gains running Benchmarks going to a 6 core 12 thread 12mb Cache!!!
More importantly, it's the "best if the best" ;)

Before you pull the pin on that RAM check out the Corsair Platinums, don't get to hung up on the extremely high speeds, bearing in mind the Memory Controller of the CPU's limitations (1600 - 1866 MHz).

That 3930k should reach 4.2 - 4.4 Ghz without too much trouble !!

Enjoy!!

Just thought I'd chime in, that board and platform supports ram speeds up to 2400mhz.

The tridents are a great choice imo, I'd also look at the RipzawsZ. G.Skill has been putting out great kit for awhile, and the Dominators are way over priced.

Just my 2 cents

Sure the Board is fine for high RAM speeds, it's the Memory Controller of the 3930k, no guarantees to hit stable speeds of 2133 MHz.
Just something to keep in mind when thinking faster is better ;)

Intel specifies 1600 MHz 1.5v for the 3930k, I'm not saying 1866 or 2133 won't work at 1.65v, just no guarentees, especially once OC'ing.

I hope to get a bit more than 4.4ghz with the 3930. I get 4.4 right now with the 3770,and no heat issues etc. and stable 24/7. We shall see what the 3930 brings. Thanks.

Cooling is going to play a part in achieving high clocks, 2011 pumps out quite a bit of heat.

Fyi: According to Intel:

Quote:
* Approximately 90-100% of CPUs can go up to 4.5GHz
* Approximately 80-90% of CPUs can go up to 4.6GHz
* Approximately 60-70% of CPUs can go up to 4.7GHz
* Approximately 40-50% of CPUs can go up to 4.8GHz
* The remaining % can yield CPUs that may offer scaling up to and in excess of 50x turbo multipliers. These CPUs are in very low % margins and in addition voltage required will considerably vary (i.e 4.8GHz at 1.400 vs 4.8GHz at 1.500). In most situations due to the excessive wattage level that needs to be dissipated unless a extremely non leaky chip (low voltage operation is hard) frequencies exceeding 5.0GHz will not be achievable under air cooling configurations.

Pretty impressive, would like to see 4.7 Ghz temps under air. I remember how much time it took me to find stable min vcore for my 980x at 4.25 Ghz.
Looking forward to this platform. Ill have some questions for your builder Killswitch re: RIVE Bios, quirks etc

Anyone heard anything more on the 3980x and possible 8 Cores 16 Threads?

Your 3770 is a standard Quad Core 8 Thread Chip, its a whole new ball game once your playing with 6 Cores and 12 Threads ;)
