Well I got this baby all put together and she is working great! However, I totally forgot about the fact the DVD was an IDE connection and this MB has none. So I had to go buy a cheap SATA DVD drive. But that was the only hardware issue I ran into.

Man I love the Asus BIOS screen. I haven't seen anything like that before. I am used to C64 type screens for a BIOS. Sweet graphics Asus.

This is also my first Win7 machine and I must say I like it a lot. Now I wants Win7.

Anyone have experience with Thunderbird email client and Shaw? I managed to import all his contacts/emails etc... from Outlook Express and can even receive email but no matter what settings I try for SMTPE (outgoing) I can't get it to send. :( I looked it up and tried the settings on a Shaw help page and still no luck.

I loaded up Empire TW with Ultra settings on 1680x1050 and it plays like buttah. Looks amazing and runs smooth. Loving this 7870 ... thanks for the recommendation great_big_abyss!

Is it a third party email (like Hotmail, gmail, etc.... ) you're trying to send over the shaw network via an email client? If so, and if it's a new shaw client you might have to register the email against the shaw account before it will allow you to send. Not sure if shaw does this, but rogers does in order to make it easy to shut down spammers on their network.

If he was running outlook express before, did he want to move over to thunderbird, or are you using that because you're not aware of the win 7 OE replacement Windows Live Mail ( https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=29224 ) ? Assuming of course that you're using a legit win7 that will verify authentic version.

It is an @shaw.ca email account. He's had that email for ages. But ya, I was thinking there might be some kind of registration with Shaw to be able to send.

Yes he was running Outlook Express before on his XP machine I built for him some years ago. I read there was no equivalent built into Win 7 so I just went with Thunderbird as a "it should be fine" measure. It is a legit copy of Win 7. You're right I wasn't aware of Windows Live Mail. I have heard of it but assumed it was a webmail service. He would want a local client app as he is a little particular about things. SO maybe I'll give it a looksy and see how it compares to Thunderbird.

Thanks!

Yeah, they really messed up with the naming of the win7 email client. It does indeed sound like a variation of their live webmail application, but it's basically OE's replacement for a proper email client.

Normally I'd say stick with Tbird, but I've heard mixed reviews on it.

edit: As far as sending goes... do you have the "requires authentication" checked off in the client for sending?

There is an "Authentication Method" field in which I have "Normal password" selected. Ya I think I am going to download Live Mail and give it a go. I am not particularly crazy about Tbird. For myself I use Outlook but that's not an option for him.

Edit:

Budda-bing budda boom. Like buttah. Thanks for the tip. Live Mail works like a charm send and receive. And I think the layout is a little more "Windows" like he's probably used to as well. Thanks SS.
