GTX 660 Vs. HD 7870 LE
Hi all.
Im helping a mate with a new build. And already found all the items for it, but on the graphics side im a bit in doubt. I been reading ALOT of reviews, and with the money he has, i've reduced it to these two cards.

MSI GeForce GTX 660 Twin Frozr 2 GB

Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 XT W/ Boost (Tahiti LE) 2GB GDDR5

They both cost about the same in my country, and the HD 7950 cost to much.

So my Questions are;

In the reviews it looks like the 7870 wins on performs, but what if he dosent overclock, will the 7870 still be the best card?

I heard that ATI drivers suck, is that true, or is the drivers for the HD 7*** okay now?

I dont know how to say this... but some ppl are saying that 7870 has more fps, but that gtx are more stable, framerate? is that true?

What card would u get, and why?

Hope u guys will help Thx you.

At the same price on those cards, brand preference is it. I would be very torn. Would depend on the titles you play or want to play.
If your playing amd partnered games go amd, if not go nvidia.

They're split down the middle. Nvidia does better in the games I play, so naturally I go with Nvidia. On the other hand, AMD has their Never Settle promotion, I don't know if it applies for you, but you get a bunch of free games with the purchase of their cards.

Regarding drivers:
AMD has built-in overclocking with monitoring, customizable hotkeys for settings.
Nvidia makes it very easy to create custom resolutions.

A lot of what you "heard" is bullshit though. Both are fine cards, just find the one that suits you/your friend better.

read this review. on the last page it compares the 660 to the 7870 and it shows the 7870 ahead by 3%. Taking into consideration certain cards doing better on certain game I would go with which ever card has the best cooling solution and most value for free games.

The 7870 LE is the better card.

the tahiti le is by far the better card, you did a typo, or this is a loaded question

GTX660, is this a standard 660 or the 660 Ti?, if standard, then the 7870 is alot more powerfull and the 7870 LE is more powerfull then the 7870 for sure(more shaders, higher clocks etc)
The 660 is more power efficent, and somehting like the MSI GTX660 Ti power edition overclock like mad, to be pretty much a GTX670 in most things
7870 LE should have been called 7930 though IMO, is very very close to 7950 raw performance when both are clocked up, and at least as good as a 670 in most cases.

I have a 7870, and love it, have since the day it came out, drivers have been so so here and there, but once you find good drivers(for me I mine, game and such so I need to be picky) nothing wrong with them, they overclock nicely, have decent temps, power draw is ok, perfomance is great, and, once AMD figures out exactly where the discrepences are, we get a good high % boost in overall performance, but for now, still great cards :)

I would go 7870 LE--powercolor myst-sapphire LE-club 3D Joker there is a few like this, sapphire seems to be the better for the cooler though.

Personally I like AMD 7XXXX . Sapphire is making good gaming cards.

I have been an Nvidia guy for many years. I just put that 7870 Tahiti in a friends new build and it chewed up and spat out everything I threw at it (in Very High or Ultra at 1680x1050, 4xAA) without making a peep. It is very quiet and a solid performer. No question... get the 7870.

Edit: Damn... this looks like an old thread. :\

As mentioned above, if your descriptions are right (660 non Ti, vs Tahiti based hd 7870), then the 7870 should be your choice if they are the same price (especially if you also get the free games). Nvidia generally do have more stable drivers, but the AMD ones are fine (the most recent ones have fixed the frame latency issues).

Yeah the 7870 tahiti is even more powerful than the 660ti,and much cheaper, awesome card.
