My System Specs

Default $500 Gaming Build

Hello all im new to this forum and im wondering what you all think of the parts i have picked for my new gaming computer. Its not the first computer i have built but it is the first time i have picked out the parts myself. 6 months ago I sold my old gaming computer my dad helped me build to switch to the ps3 so i could game with my friends... BIG MISTAKE! lol.

so here are the specs...
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3
Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 8GB kit
Fractal Design Core 1000 mATX case
Thermaltake TR2 500W
MSI Radeon HD 7770 1gb
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB

i want to go with a i5 and a 660 ti but im saving for school and cant spend a lot so i have made my budget $500 Before Taxes and Shipping. what do you all think? is there anything you would change? Anything that would make it better but keep it under the $500? if this is what i go with i will later upgrade the processor to the FX-8350 i think it is, ill up grade to 16gbs and ill upgrade the video card to the 660 ti. so want do you all think?

Ooooooooooooh this is tough.

First of all: What games do you play/intend on playing?

Second: Is there any possibility of waiting and thereby expanding the budget?

Do yourself a solid, spend a little more money and get yourself an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 - $94.99. You'll find it's a much better board than the Gigabyte one you were looking at.

Also, instead of buying a new video card, look for a used one in the BST. I know there's probably a few mid-range cards hanging around that would be similarly priced to the 7770 you specc'ed, but much better performing. IN fact, try to source as many parts as possible from the BST, including motherboard and processor.

i will be playing games like WoW, LoL, Diablo, Bo2, AC3, FC3 and so on anything new pretty much. i would go with the motherboard u picked because of the crossfire support but i need a small computer for a few reasons :P so i have decided on a ASUS M5A88-M MotherBoard and my friend has offered to help me out and sell me his 660ti for $150 since he got a 680 lightning ed. so im just gonna get 8gb or vengence ram and later get the FX-8350. so what do you guys think? im starting to order the parts Thursday.

Yup. Look around the BST Forum for as much stuff as possible. IMO, used means validated.

Have you considered going with a core i3? its not too far in price from the phenom and it would be better for gaming in almost all situations than the phenom. It would also give you an upgrade path to an i5 or an i7 later.

Motherboards:
MSI Z77MA-G45 mATX LGA1155 Z77 DDR3 2PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 SATA3 DVI HDMI VGA USB3.0 Motherboard
ASUS P8Z77-M mATX LGA1155 Z77 DDR3 2PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 1PCI SATA3 HDMI DVI USB3.0 Motherboard

if you have a preference for asus that should be a great board, but it does not have as many audio ins/outs, if you need those the msi board may be better, the msi board also appears to be able to do x8x8 pci 3 sli if i am not mistaken as long as you wouldnt need any other pci cards, but with a 660ti i would just upgrade to a new graphics card rather than ever sli with it when you need more power

Processor:
Intel Core i3 3220 Dual Core Hyperthreading Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Ivy Bridge 3MB Retail Box

ivy bridge core i3, again leaves you able to upgrade to an i5 later

using this idea would cost more now, but you are getting a great deal on the gpu you wish you could get and then if you do this you have the upgrade path to a processor you wish you could get, and an i3 is good for gaming as well

FYI, I'll probably have an M5A97 (original revision) for sale in the BST in a week...I just have to test and make sure my new motherboard works before committing it for sale, but it's an excellent motherboard for a budget Phenom II build. It supports 3.8Ghz on a Phenom II 965 on air, and right now it's doing 3.7 on a 1055T with an AIO liquid cooler.

It will be significantly cheaper than buying a brand new board, and better quality than the 78LMT listed in this thread!
