New Build - Used Parts - Shoestring Budget

Hey guys. This is my first post, here or any online hardware forum for that matter.. I'm a proud Canuck, born a bred Toronto boy, figured this is where I need to start.

Was hoping you guys could shed some light.

My current setup:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2PT Socket 775
Ram: Kingston HyperX Genesis 4GB DDR3 1600MHz
CPU: Intel® Core2 Quad Processor Q9300 (6M Cache, 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
GPU: SAPPHIRE 100312-3SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16
PSU: Thermaltake TR-600 TR2 ATX Power Supply - 600W
Case: Generic Canada Computers Mid-Size case
Monitor: LG L204WT-SF (x2)
HD's: WD Caviar Black - 500GB & 2TB

With this current setup I cant do everything I'd like. The GPU the great, I'd eventually like to get a 3rd L204WT monitor(already found a seller) and run an Eyefinity setup for my MS Flight Simulator X. ATM I can run FSX with Dual-Monitors at 30fps avg. on Mid-High settings. I want to be able to run FSX on Very High settings with a full on 5040x1050 Eyefinity setup.

This is what I've been offered. I think it'll do the trick but I want to get your opinions on hardware performance and price.

Mobo: Asus Rampage III Extreme - $150
CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W - $150
Ram: Corsair XMS3 DOMINATOR-GT 3X2GB DDR3-2000 CL8-9-8-24 - $100
Cooling: Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU Cooler - $50

The guy I'm buying it from said it's all mine for $400.
From my research this setup should be able to Overclock like a rocket. Although I wont push it too hard as I need it to last. However, with that setup I'll most likely need to buy a SSD and I'll have my 2 HD's as storage. Thats going to run me another $100.
SO thats $500 minimum.

Plus, I dont know if my PSU has the juice to let this mother off the leash..potentially another $100. And another thought, it's probably going to run hotter then mama's stove.. ?

If my budget was ~$500. Would you recommend this setup? Do you think I could find better hardware for a better price elsewhere? Go with new hardware? Would this setup have the balls to power FSX with Eyefinity. Can you foresee any complications or further expenses I might run into?

Your opinions and experience would mean a lot to me.
Many thanks

I wouldn't buy it. I would go for an i5 3570k ($220), budget z77 motherboard ($120), 2x4gb 1600mhz ram ($40) and cooler master hyper 212 evo ($30). That's $410 + tax and will be faster and new than the used parts you listed. Wait for boxing week and I am sure you could save some decent amounts as well.

Considering the fact that another user here is selling the same board with 16GB of RAM and i7-920 for $350, the other guy's price is too much. As for Boxing Day sales, I didn't notice NCIX having anything way cheaper than their regular weekly sales. If you can wait may as well wait a bit.

Give this a whirl,

Intel Core i5-2550K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.40Ghz $199.99 (should oc to 4.5ghz)

ASRock Z77 Extreme3 Socket 1155 Intel Z77 $139.99 - $40 mir $99.99 after mir

Kingston HyperX Genesis 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 $25.99 (I chose this because you can also use the 4 gig kit youalready have assuming its a 2 x 2g kit, if its 4 x 1g then get a new 2 x 4g kit for roughly $40)

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Direct Heat Pipe CPU Cooler $34.99

Total: $400.46 + tax - $40 mir

If you can get that bundle for $300 I'd say go for it, otherwise it wouldn't be worth it. As others have said it would be better to go for an ivy bridge setup, your PSU will be fine as long as you are only running a single GPU.

I agree with supaflyx3's take on that psu. How old is it anyway?

Hey! Awesome advice, many thanks. Told that guy to get stuffed, he wouldn't drop the price.

After selling all my old computer parts and much looking around I've decided to do what Bond007 suggested, kind of. Holding off for Boxing Day then going to grab:

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Socket 1155 Intel Z77 Chipset
Intel Core i5-3570K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.4Ghz
or
Intel Core i7-3770K Socket 1155, 3.50Ghz
*Depending on which has the better BD deal, leaning towards i7 as its more future proof and holds better resale value when I upgrade again*
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
8GB of some kick ass ram, which I haven't looked into yet.
Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD
And a beefy 750W 80+ cert PSU, I'll make a shotgun call on BD.

And maybe a BlueRay drive, get the gf to buy me one plus the SSD, shes a dreadful gift giver..

What do you guys think, am I missing something..? If you guys have some input on any of the items I'd be very interested to hear it.

Hopefully, with some sweet deals this shouldn't cost over $500. As you can tell I'm very optimistic on boxing day. :P
