My System Specs

Default New 3570K gaming build

This is a build I'm putting together for a co-worker. He'll be gaming on it. He already has a 23" monitor, and he doesn't plan on going bigger. He's relatively new to computers, so he won't be overclocking. However, when I build his system, I'll probably just bump up the multiplier a few times and see what kind of stable OC I can get without bumping up the voltages.

I quoted prices from NCIX, but when we buy, we may just go to Memory Express here in town and pricematch to NCIX.

Intel Core i5 3570K - $219.99
ASUS P8Z77-V Lk Motherboard - $139.99
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ Heatsink - $29.64
Corsair Vengeance Blue 1600 MHZ 2x4GB RAM - $39.71
Powercolor Radeon HD7950 OC 880Mhz - $299.99 <--I picked this card because the 7900 series comes with 3 free games. I've also owned this very card, and it works fine. I never ever had a problem with it. Runs quiet, too.
Corsair Professional HX650W Powersupply - $89.99
Crucial M4 128GB SSD - $104.99
WD Caviar Blue 1TB HDD - $74.99
Bitfenix Shinobi ATX Case - $59.99

Total: $1079.28

Anybody see any red flags here? My primary question would be the motherboard. I'm not too familiar with Z77 boards and the different models that ASUS offers up. I think the LE offers up enough features for a mid-range rig with a mild overclock on it.

I chose the Powercolor 7950 because of the three free games you get with a 7900 series card. Also, the Powercolor is very well priced, and as I've owned this card since March (just traded it away, actually) I'm very confident that it's a quality piece.

Looks like a solid build there. I'm not familiar with that board in particular, but you usually can't go wrong with asus.

I changed the motherboard to a P8Z77-V Lk. Memex here in Winnipeg doesn't have the LE in stock, so I chose the Lk.

The only differences I can see is that the Lk does not support Quad-SLI, which isn't a deal breaker in this case. The Lk also comes with one extra PCI-e 16x slot.
The Lk lacks the Marvell PCIe SATA 6GB/s controller, giving it 2 less SATA 6GB/s ports (it already has two from the Z77 chip). Again, not a deal breaker.

It looks fine to me. I would suggest against overclocking it though since you're building for someone who has little knowledge about this matter, for them reliability > performance. You wouldn't want to wake up at 3AM to a call from him because of a BSOD.
