50% Gaming - 50% Vid.Edit, Z77 or X79

Hi guys,

I'm building a new rig for gaming and video editing, and I can't really decide if I should go for a
X79 mobo (quad channel ram) with like an i7 3820 (2nd Gen)
or
Z77 mobo (dual channel ram) with i7 3770K (3rd Gen)

Any thoughts ??

And what about PCIe, is there any arguments there ?

the 3770K is actually a tiny bit faster than the 3820. I'd only go x79 if you were thinking of getting a 6 core cpu or running 3 video cards in SLI/Xfire. Quad channel memory won't make that much difference i don;t think.

depends how fast you want your videos processed, but I would go 1155 with some water cooling, H60/H80. For video processing you can add a vid card that has good Open CL in case your software will take advantage of that too.

So I'm convinced now.

I'm going for:

CPU: i7 3770K

Mobo: MSI Z77 MPower

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite x 4

GPU: eVGA GTX 660Ti SC+ (3GB)

Audio: ASUS ROG Xonar Phoebus

SSD: OCZ VERTEX 4 SATA III

HDD: WD Black WD1002FAEX 1 TB

Case: Cooler Master CM Storm Scout 2

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster S27B350H
(can't figure out if I'm gonna miss the DVI port)

Headset: SteelSeries 7H
(Iv'e been happy with my H5 V2 for years, so I thought I would go the same route with a new set)

Sound: I have my big Dennon-Technics-Dali studio setup

Any thoughts on the choices ?

from what I've heard, you only need 35MB of seq. write in order to make the video encoder happy. In which case, a black is seriously overpowered and a Green would be fine. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I'd be interested in seeing the benchmarks.

EDIT: have a 'source' drive and a 'target' drive of course

Well, it's my bad I forgot to mention that the WD Black is only for gamefiles ect.
All files regarding video editing is on my server (RAID array) and is fetched over a 10Gb fiber through a PCIe fiber NIC, and everything else is either on cloud or on my server.

Also, I didn't write anything about PSU as I have a Corsair HX750 lying around that I figured I'd be using for this build.

I've changed my mind about some of the stuff.
The case is changed to HAF XM instead as I think it will suit my nedds better and I like the x-docks.
The monitor is changed to Asus VE278Q wich gets better reviews and has DisplayPort.
The GPU is changed to a GTX680 (2GB) as I thought "what the hell, better safe than sorry", though I had my doubts because of the 1 Gig difference in ram.


I ordered everything + some misc. but the case won't be in stock until the 17th.

Now it's just the waiting that going to kill me
