Default i3 Build

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
The PC is for my Aunt. It will be used for basic web browsing, e-mail and general MS office tasks.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
Budget is $500.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Ordering parts from Calgary AB.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference.
This will be an Intel i3 build.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Currently have Windows XP, a monitor and peripherals.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
No overclocking

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
In the next few weeks.

9. What resolution and settings do you use?
This is not a gaming machine, but would prefer 1080p res.

Here is a list of parts I have currently spec'd out:
Processor
Intel Core™ i3-3220T Processor, 2.8 GHz w/ 3MB Cache BX80637I33220T
$124.99

Motherboard
MSI Z77A-G41 w/ DDR3 2800, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 2 Way CrossFireX
$79.99

Memory
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 4GB PC3-10666 Dual Channel DDR3 Kit (2 x 2GB)
$18.99

Hard Drive
Seagate 1TB Barracuda SATA III w/ 64MB Cache
$67.24

DVD-RW
Samsung SH-222BB 22x DVD-Writer SATA, Black, OEM
$17.41

Case
Bitfenix Outlaw ATX Mid Tower Case
$49.99

Power Supply
Corsair Builder Series CX430 V2 Power Supply
$36.57

Printer
Canon PIXMA Wireless All-In-One Inkjet Printer (MX432)
$44.98

Total: $440.16

How's this processor vs the i3 3240? Should I pay $20 more for the 3240?
Is this MB good? I found it to be one of the cheapest 1155 boards at Memory Express. I'm not buying a dedicated graphics card, will basic video playback be sluggish?

What about one of the new trinity APU's from AMD? These are perfect for your needs. They have dedicated graphics on the cpu, so there will be no worries about sluggish video playback and they are power efficient, etc, etc.

AMD A8-560K APU Quad Core Processor Socket FM2 3.2GHZ 4MB 100W Retail Box
100 bucks
ASRock FM2A75 PRO4-M mATX FM2 A75 FCH DDR3 2PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 1PCI SATA3 HDMI DVI USB3.0 Motherboard
79 bucks

Motherboard availability at NCIX is not great at the moment but newegg or memory express may have better selection.

Video playback will not be sluggish on the i3 but occasional gaming will unless is done at seriously reduced resolutions. Might want to consider the FM2 setup, better all rounder. For HDD you might want to consider the ST1000DM003 model, is the fastest they have on 7200RPM.

As mentioned you could consider fm2 if you will do mild gameing at low res, otherwise I think you build looks great for a budget build as is. The only thing I would do is go to 8gb ram given how cheap it is.

What I'm wary about is the choice of Windows XP - the computer will outlast the operating system given that MS is discontinuing quite a lot of software for that EOL'd OS. You're stuck with IE8 (which is a hazard) and Office 2010.
If I were building it I'd drop to an AMD APU build to save up for Windows 7/8 or run the computer with Ubuntu instead of running Windows XP with all its unfixed exploits.

As for your CPU/IGP question, I don't notice the difference between my laptop's mobile Core i5 and my desktop's i5 2500k with web browsing and MS Office. Really those basic tasks + any modern processor will actually get you hard drive bottlenecked before being CPU bound. Someone who does more stuff off an Intel IGP can chime in, but I have no problems with YouTube videos and similar on my laptop running Intel 3000 graphics.

To be very honest with you, Windows 8 looks really, how to put it, "flashy", "show-off-y" or "weird"... it looks to be more in thought of tablet/touchscreen laptop users rather than a desktop.
