My System Specs

Default New Xmas build for my Stepson

So my stepson likes to play Spore on my computer (taking away from Skyrim time, but what am I to do?). He's also expressed interest in Minecraft, but I've determined that if I install Minecraft on my rig, I can just forget about playing skyrim again. Ever. Because the boy will always be on it.

So, I've decided (and more importantly, convinced the wife) that I'd like to build a small, low end rig for him and give it to him as a Christmas present.

The rig will be used to play spore, Minecraft, and other 'low horsepower' games such as the Lego series (he's eleven). As such, to keep costs down, I think I'd like to build him an IGP system for now, and if he gets into FPS's/RPG's in a few years, I'll be able to just throw in a mid-range graphics card and call it a day.

Budget is a consideration, as we have a baby due in October. I can't go crazy with parts, hence the need for an IGP build. I'd like to keep it around the $600 mark, including, if possible, a monitor. If any of you can build me an Intel build with a video card for that mark, please let me know.

I'll probably be waiting a month or two to build this, so while I'll be spec'ing Llano right now, if Trinity comes out in the meantime, and is well priced, I may just as well go Trinity. Anyways, onwards to the build:

Asus F1A55-M LE mATX FM1 APU Motherboard - $63.99
AMD A8-3870K Black APU - $99.99
Stock Cooler - Will add Coolermaster Hyper 212 after build is complete
G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB DDR3 - 1866 RAM $54.64
WD Caviar Blue 250GB HDD $61.88
Bitfenix Shinobi Windowed ATX Mid Tower Case - $69.99
XFX 450W Core Edition 80Plus Bronze Powersupply - $59.99
LG E2242C-BN 21.5" Monitor - $109.99
Logitech M110 Mouse - $19.99
Logitech K120 Keyboard - $16.99

Total: $557.45 plus taxes, shipping.

Ram upped to 1866
Aftermarket cooler replaced with Stock cooler
DVD Drive removed
Monitor replaced with 21.5" LG
PowerSupply replaced with XFX unit.

Alternative #1:

Same build as above, except: replace the APU/FM1 board with a i5, 1155 board and a 7770. Put the i5 in my computer, and put my AMD hex-core in the boy's machine.

ASUS P8Z77-V ATX Motherboard - $146.99
Intel Core i5 3570K - $219.99
MSI Radeon HD7770 - $119.99

Total (including the rest of the original build): $923.81. BUT, I get to upgrade my processor!

Drop the cooler for now and put that coin into 1866Mhz DDR3 the AMD APUs like their ram speed and OC ok-ish on the stock cooler(if not OCing don't even think about the cooler as stock is fine). These are the changes I would make if you wanted to cut a bit of coin.

Case - Antec Three Hundred Two Mid Tower Gaming Case 302 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB3.0 & Audio - Antec - THREE HUNDRED TWO $39 after MIR

Power Supply Seasonic SS-350ET 350W ATX12V 20/24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 80PLUS 120MM Fan OEM - Seasonic Electronics - SS-350ET

if not adding a GPU, don't worry about paying a PS that can handle it for it right now.

Just my 2 cents if I wanted to cut that build down a bit.

Hmm, good point. I actually went for the cooler because:

1) I would be mildly overclocking, and
2) The Stock AMD coolers are very loud and obnoxious. The cooler is mainly for noise control.

But Yes, that is something that I could add after the fact. Consider it removed.

I like your case choice. But I like the Bitfenix better. I've always wanted to build in a Bitfenix case, so this is my chance.

I'll leave the powersupply as is. I may end up putting a GPU in there in the future, so I'd rather get a capable powersupply right from the start.

That monitor's way too expensive for a 19".

Here's a 21" on sale for 109.99 - LG E2242C-BN 21.5IN Widescreen LED Backlit LCD Monitor 1920X1080 5MS 5M:1 VGA VESA Mount Black - LG Electronics - E2242C-BN

And consider dropping the DVD if the budget is that tight. Use yours temporarily to install windows. I don't have DVD burners in my latest builds, I have a cheap external I use if necessary.

Unless you can find me an i3 dual core as well as a discrete GPU for the same price, it's a little out of my price range. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of a 7750.

If I was going to get an i5, I would get one for my own rig, and pass the hex-core onto the kiddo. THAT, however, is out of the question, since it's not in the budget.

Yeah, you can ditch the DVDROM drive and use yours over the network if you want.

I'd get the Hyper212 now otherwise you're going to have to pull the motherboard to install it..... that's not worth the $20 in savings in my mind.

I think you could do better on the PSU though. I wouldn't use the builder series from Corsair or the Basiq series from Antec.

Price match that all up and you've got something decent. If you wait you'll catch some sales on those same parts, I know I've just seen the MB/CPU combo for $150, and it was a better MB than you have picked out.

What would you recommend for the powersupply in that price range?

I actually don't mind pulling the motherboard at a later date. I like tinkering, and any excuse to play is okay by me.

Out of your price range? Isn't it about the same price as your original build you quoted us? Just with better parts. I am lost here :S

You didn't include a GPU. Sandy Bridge IGP is not worth it!
