Dont take what i am about to say the wrong way im just expressing my opinion on low-end PC's, they look cheap when you purchase them but at long term you will see they will become a big expense. These kind of computers dont last more than 6months without something having to be upgraded due to the fact the computer wont handle anything that comes out, ending up with a major paper weight in your house.
I dont know if he has a console but i would suggest instead of this offering him a console and some games. Cheaper and he can enjoy it probably in a long term more than this.

$600 is not cheap at all. Can you spend more? of course you can. Upgrade every 6 months? Maybe the way you build/spec them.

I'm with you there, the old me used a $600 computer for years now a days I buy a new system every 6 months not cuz I need it cuz I want it, I find that most half decent mid range towers will last years if treated right and in time you upgrade with needs.

My wife was happy with her dual core AM2 6000+ till she used my 8 core AMD system now she has a i7 and I have a dual 8core C32 not cuz we needed them just cuz we wanted them hahaha

Not everyone wants or needs high end systems. Low end systems have their place.

Im not saying otherwise, low end PC's are usefull depending on the utility you are going to give to it. But in this particular case it is a PC to play Spore,Minecraft, Lego series and since budget is an issue due to the arrival of the baby a XBOX 360 (that contains all those games) is much cheaper and gives the same fun if not more since he can get more games for it and play with his godfather and use it for extra features like watching a dvd and so on. And it is only $299

As i mentioned above it is just an opinion i dont want to start an argument of any kind. :)

EDIT:
Im not related to microsoft in any way, im a PS3 fanboy :p

the fact remains that 99% of all current titles are gpu dependant. The fps based on cpu drops pretty quick after 100 fps.
