How much of an upgrade is this?
Hey there, looking for some advice. My current setup is a AMD 940 3.0 GHz processor with Crossfire ATI 5770s and 8 GB of DDR2 ram. This setup right now can run most games in medium settings at 1080p fine but does slow to a crawl if I run it on max settings or record games with fraps. The bottleneck of the setup seems to be the CPU and crossfire isn't supported in alot of the games.
Had this computer for about 2 years and I am looking to upgrade so I can play the newer games (especially MMOs) on the max settings and record gameplay videos without suffering a serious FPS drop. I have about $1k to spend and looking for the following parts
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
MSI Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card
8-16 GB of DDR3 ram.
How much of an upgrade is this, are there any better setups than this for the price range?
Oh another thing I like to mention is that I have 3 22' inch monitors (used to an eyeinfinity setup but now I use the 2 extra monitors for multi-tasking and just game on the central 22' inch monitor). I tend to run alot of games on windowed mode so I can multi-task on the other two monitors at the same time.
I would say this is quite the substantial upgrade.

Check out the difference between the 940 and the 2500k. I couldn't find a comparison for the 3570k but you can add roughly 4-7% performance increase when comparing 2500k to 3570k. 8gb of ram should be fine. I would just go with 8 and put the other 50 towards a gpu. Have you considered the 7950 or even a 7970 since the recent price drops again?
Also I would say don't be afraid to use the BST section on this site. You can find some great deals as a matter of fact there is a 7950 or 7970 brand new in the box for sale at the moment.
Are you from Canada? Do you have a store preference to order from?
Hey, thanks for the quick response. I am from Canada, don't have a store preference but I buy everything online and use all the major online stores - NCIX, DirectCanada, Memory Express, Newegg.ca etc.
Thinking of shelling out the cash for a 7950 actually since my crossfire 5770s cost the same as the 7950 back when I brought it (big mistake, alot of games I play didn't support crossfire so it was a wasted card). How big of a performance boost is the 7950 over the 7850 to worth the extra $100 cost?
Btw, I have no interest in overclock anything and will run everything at stock speeds. Had really bad experience with OC in the past so prefer to not do it.
If you're playing at 1080, you'll be fine with the 7850. Go for the 7950 if you want to eventually play on a 27" or 30" monitor. Otherwise it's just a wasted $100 IMO.
I just bought the XFX HD 7950 OC Black Ed. Playing on a 24" monitor at 1920x1200 res, works awesome. Have yet to drop below 70 FPS in Guild Wars 2 even in combat. Only other game I have played on it is CS:GO and lets just say no worries with FPS there ;)
Oh ya, it's a great card. If you have the extra $100 to burn, go for the 7950. If not, the 7850 will do the job just fine, and you could put the $100 towards an SSD ($120 for a quality 120GB SSD these days)
Would the fact that he's still driving 3 monitors even if he's only gaming on one have much affect on performance while gaming on a single monitor?
I'm a little bit concerned that a single card might not be up to the task, but then again I don't do multi-monitors on my main gaming rig.
Nah he should be fine with either of those cards running triple display with only one for gaming. I have friends running a single 6850 doing it just fine in all the latest games.
Since you said you had no intentions of overclocking you could save a few bucks and get a 3550/3450/3570 non k. Just an option pending the deals you are able to find. It should be a great overall improvment. As others have said the 7850 will be great, but it if the funds are available you could step up another notch in performance.
Serriously.. Overclock it... there are sooo many easy to follow (cos overclocking has gotten seriously easier the last 5 years) how to guides and even youtube video's.. you really should OC that monster..
