My System Specs

Default Build for Skyrim

I am putting together a system for my cousin. He wants it to play Skyrim. Here is a list of the parts I have for it. He will be gaming at a resolution of 1920x1080.

Intel Core i5 2500K
Gigabyte GA-Z68-D3H-B3
Kingston HyperX 8GB DDR3-1600
Gigabyte GTX 560 Windforce
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm SATA3
Corsair TX750M
Antec Kuhler H2O 920

I will be overclocking this of course.

I haven't decided on a case yet, probably a Bitfenix Shinobi or NZXT Phantom 410.

What kind of frame rates do you think he can expect or do you think the video card would hinder it?

Video card is definitely the weak link there.. Drop the Antec Kuhler and the PSU down to a 650 watt or EVEN a 550 watt version of the same one and bump the GPU as high as you can afford.
Could even save on the case... the HAF 912 is about $30-$35 these days.. thats a good case for such a low price.

Replace the cooler with something more budget like a cm 212..
Of course you won't get as cooling and hence oc but then the CPU won't be the limiting factor from your list of parts.

Make sure the barracuda is a 7200.14 rather than the older version.

Particular reason for the 2500k and z68 board? on sale very cheap?
Also if you have trouble with the board you'll have trouble with gigabyte, rma to the states and all..
Heard good things about their CS but have no experience of their boards, MSI.. and they have a Canadian RMA centre.

I agree... if this is a budget gaming system, I'd drop to an AMD CPU (X4 965 BE's are only $89!), minimize the cooler to a 212 (only going to make a few degrees of difference) and drop the PSU to a 600-650. After all this, you'll have saved more than enough to jump to a 660ti. And that's a system that will handle any game on the market right now at 1080p.

Building for skyrim can be very tricky as there's so many mods that can affect the requirement. If he play with loads of graphic mods (HD texture, ENB, etc.) the 660 ti can be the minimum needed for a decent FPS.

Getting the 660 also means that this build will last longer without upgrades.

Thanks for the input.

The parts I have listed are what I already have. I could sell the Antec Khuler 920 and sell the 560 and put a bit of cash with that and get a better video card.

If you have all the parts, then I would say build and see how happy your cousin is... if he needs better graphics then he can pony up the extra dosh / think about selling the extra bits that could generate him the extra cash.
