hey guys,

I was stuck on the X79 platform but after much thought and input from some post i made, i have kicked that idea :P

My budget is: $1200-$1300

Parts i'm re-using: RAM, PSU, Keyboard, Mouse, monitor, OS, Case.

i'll be using it for: Gaming, Folding @home, Vmware (in the future)

buying from: wintroniccomputers.com (there a 5 min walk from my house)


So, the RAM i will be re-using is Corsair Vengeance 8GB Kit 1866MHZ. The PSU is a BGF 750W SLI Ready. The case is an Antec 900 Two V3. The other parts don't matter that much.

Also keep in mind i will be getting a GTX 680 so the budget must include that. There will be no shipping as i can walk there and pick it up.

I'm looking forward to hearing you input, i always like to get other opinions other then my own.

Are you overclocking?

Cpu: i5, i5"K" if you're over"K"locking : ~ $250
MoBo: Z77 mobo: ~$150-250 depending on how crazy u get.
HDD: 1TB WD Caviar black ~ $120
Video Card: 680 GTX: I would get the ASUS direct CU 2 Top for ~$550. My dcu2 6950 is really quiet even @ 100% fan. Only downside is it's 3 slots.

Total: $920

With the remainder of the money I would say to buy some nice intel SSDs.

Don;t use those ssds and don't go with an lx board. Go with intel or crucial ssd and not corsair. They might be fast but reloading the os and games every few month and rma'ing ssds is a pain. The lx boards are terrible overclockers and why not go with a z77 instead of z68 since it is designed for ivy bridge.

Depends on how much he's doing really.. If he'd going to be doing alot of VM's at the same time or they need alot of power, then yes.. if not then the i5 will be plenty

On the SSD's, why 2?

and agree with the z77 board.. if getting an ivy chip get a z77 too (drop the second ssd for a bump on the mobo)

have you compared the price of the store you've picked to something like NCIX or memoryexpress? might be worth it if you save more than the shipping costs
(though if you do have problems RMA is really easy with a store around the corner)

The Asus board is the one i currently have now so i was going to use it for now then upgrade to a sabertooth Z77 in the future. As for the 2 SSD's one would be for the OS and one for Games. As for the price of the store i picked, they beat Newegg.ca and ncix 95 % of the time.

This upgrade is making me think, i wan't something good but i keep changing my mind on what i should get lol.

Its not really worth it to get an SSD for games unless you get a big one (and even then your gonna see AT BEST a 5 sec decrease in load times maybe......) so the price for what your gonna get is not worth it IMO

I changed the parts when they didn't stock it to the closest thing. I also didn't include the Asus motherboard as you said you already have it. Also didn't include SSds, but ou get the point, it's resonnaly cheaper elsewhere, if you live close to a NCIX or MemoryExpress, you should consider it. Maybe even with shipping it's still going to be cheaper than local.

The BFG PSU, Corsair RAM, Case, MB and 1.5TB HDD i already have from my old build, i was going to reuse them. The reason i'm going with Wintronics is because i can walk there and pick up all my parts ( I don't like to wait for delivery lol). Then it's also easier if anything is wrong with a part.

If it's not worth it to get on SSD for games how would this be, a 90GB SSd for the OS, and a seagate momentus XT 500GB hybrid-HDD for games as i do have alot.
