New upgrade..thoughts?
hey guys,

I'm upgrading my gaming system (current specs below) and i'm wondering how this system will perform compared to me previous build.

Intel core i3 2120
Asus P8Z68-V LX
Corsair Vengence 8 GB 1866MHZ
WD 1.5 TB HD 5.9K RPM
Thermaltake 750W SLI PSU
AMD HD 6850

intel core i7 3820
ASUS Rampage IV gene
8 GB Corsair Vengence 1866MHZ (will be adding 8Gb more in the near future)
WD 1.5TB HD (will be adding 2x segeate momentus XT 500GB in raid 0)
AMD HD 7850 OC edition (will be CFX them in the future)
Thermaltake 750W SLI PSU

I know it's all over the internet that it's not worth going for a i7 3820 but i like the platform so i can't seem to change my mind on the matter.

i will be using the system for heavy gaming and Vmware workstation with multi Os's both server and Client for my MCITP Enterprise admin.

You'll gain the ability to overclock and get more cores with the 3820. What about adding a 128 GB ssd instead of the raided hard drives? You should be able to find an ssd for under 1$/GB on sale at the moment. Crucial M4's are a good choice. Other than that it looks good.

I was thinking about going wih an SSD but the storage isn't enough for me. I would like to have an SSD (120Gb) for the OS then those hybrid-HDD's in raid 0 for games.

Would that be a good setup?

I would recommend the SSD idea as well. SSD will speed up the system considerably.

I support adding more RAM for virtualization but that's about it where extra RAM is going to shine.

I would hold off on the CPU + Mobo at least until LGA2011 receives the Ivy Bridge treatment and use that money towards 7950 or even 7970 even if it involves virtualization. I don't think the price you pay for the performance gain will be very marginal.

I would also go for an SSD vice the raid drives. Otherwise its a pretty solid upgrade.

What about keeping the Z68 chipset mobo, buying an i5-3570k, SSD and GPU?

Lucasrivers June 28, 2012 07:43 PM

ya, i'm not going to stick with the Z68...the X79 is a more sold platform offering more features. The i7 3820 might not be as good as an ivy-bridge i7 3770 but once i throw an IB-E into my X79 Mb i'm pretty sure it will beat it or at lease tie. The diffrence will be that i will have more Memory throughput, more PCI-E lanes, more cores (I know more then 4 cores will do no good for gaming) i could go on :p

I keep hearing all over the internet that the LGA2011 isn't worth it but it just seems like a good buy to me :)

Also i will be throwing in an SSD in the future but i need something with more storage/speed for the mean time...my 5.9K drive isn't cutting it lol.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Also mono...what you suggested is a gaming geared setup...i'm looking to do more then just game. i do know that i could to it with a cheaper platform but LGA2011 just stands out to me :P

Why not a 120GB SSD, and then a 1 or 2 tb 7200RPM, in cached mode?

Hey if you have the money to go with a 2011 platform and that is what you want then hey, it's not a bad idea. Have you considered just getting the 3930k to begin with instead of the 3820? I know it may be more but if you are planning to upgrade in the future may as well save yourself some money.

I also vouch for the SSD. I never want to use a PC without one again. I think the SSD with your dual HDD's in raid would be great!

Lucasrivers June 29, 2012 09:09 AM

I would love to go for the 3930K :P but it's not in my budget.....the GPU i have listed above actually died :( if i didn't need a new one i would grab that CPU :P
